Sorry, I can't find the book, but there are many on Amazon about certified sleep training. The theory is that the baby needs to be trained to put him/herself back to sleep, a life skill. It really worked for us, though it involved a couple of nights where we didn't get much sleep ourselves!

Real sleep training isn't "cry it out." There is a system. We went through it with our youngest, and after 3 or 4 nights he was sleeping like...well, a baby. He had tons of love and snuggles.
