I love this type of work. I have great admiration for the "classics" of modern polisci as they did a lot with limited data. Articles like this one, however, are extremely useful to really consolidate the relevance, or irrelevance, of their findings! Straight to my Comparative Politics Syllabus.

Democracies under strain – the political effects of financial bailouts
The Eurozone crisis shows that governments often have no choice but to accept externally imposed policies, despite their unpopularity.
What does it mean for democracy when governments have to accept externally imposed policies?
A new book by @rubenruizrufino.bsky.social shows how democracy can come under strain when supranational institutions and national governments fail to work collaboratively. blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2...

Very grateful to @lseeuroppblog.bsky.social for their interest my book #DemocracyUnderStrain. The entry also considers contexts beyond the 2010 sovereign debt crisis. What if military assitance from NATO came with political conditionalities? More here blogs.lse.ac.uk/europpblog/2...

Yes and No. "Yes" in the sense that the more we talk about "them", the likelier they increase salience. But "No" in the sense that a) ignoring these trends will not make the problem go away and b) there are elections in Wales in 2026 and these predictions are consistent with other polls.

I see your point in this armageddon scenario but focusing on CON misses the point that LAB loses 82% of the seats one election after winning a large seat majority with a very slim vote share. This chart has just ruined my day...

Very proud of this new publication. My fantastic co-author, Lea Heyne, and I look at how the management of the COVID19 economic shock affected attitudes towards democracy in the same group of countries that had experienced the 2010 sovereign debt crisis. And we found good news! #DemocracyUnderStrain
