Asylum in UK to be made temporary under Home Secretary’s plans Shabana Mahmood will lay out reforms modelled on the Danish system on Monday.

To reiterate, this is about making life immeasurably more miserable and stressful for some of the most vulnerable people, in the almost certainly vain hope of winning over the votes of racists.

Anything more shabby and shameful is difficult to envisage.

The JMLR story and operating model should be widely known in academia as a clear success story for full open access. I have friends in the humanities and pure sciences that have no clue this is even possible

This is a lie.

There are many criticisms you might sensibly and truthfully make of the Sentencing Council and the Sentencing Guidelines. I’ve been making them for years.

But this is an outright lie. Pure fabrication. A fraud on the public.

Trump Offered Universities an Invitation for a Deal. Some See a Trap.

This is grotesque: the Trump regime wants to give 9 universities, including my alma mater MIT, a leg up on federal funding in exchange for their servitude. I have to hope MIT and the others have the integrity to tell them where to shove it. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/02/u...

My family came here 50 years ago. They've worked, paid taxes, raised families, been good citizens.

My many colleagues and friends who were either born elsewhere, or their parents were, the same.

It's so offensive to be told you're here on sufferance.

Tory candidates must pledge support for leaving ECHR or stand down, says Jenrick Shadow justice secretary demands prospective MPs sign contract saying they stand for β€˜Conservative values’ UK politics – latest updates

It seems Jenrick doesn't "only" want to leave the ECHR but also repeal "a whole series of other laws [...] whether it’s the Equalities Act, the Human Rights Act, the Climate Change Act ...".

What a despicable person.

Children offered chickenpox vaccine on NHS All young children in England and Wales will be offered a free chickenpox vaccine by the NHS from January 2026.

Although rare, chickenpox can lead to severe complications. Infection also means parents and kids have to take time off work and school.

Free vaccination on the NHS is fantastic news.

It is a (dire) fact that the number of publicly-trans academics is… tiny (a fact due to structural factors). How many of those academics would even have applied to these JRFs? I really can’t understand this trans-exclusionary policy as anything other than an ugly political statement.

A line graph titled "On their bikes" shows transport volume trends in the City of London from 1999 to 2024, measured in thousands. The graph compares two transport modes: motor vehicles (light red line) and bicycles (dark red line). The motor vehicle line starts at approximately 190,000 in 1999 and shows a steady decline over the years, reaching around 50,000 by 2024. In contrast, the bicycle line begins just above 0 in 1999 and gradually increases over time, crossing the motor vehicle line around 2023, and also reaching approximately 50,000 in 2024. This indicates that bicycle traffic has equaled and possibly surpassed motor vehicle traffic in the City of London. Data was collected at 12 locations during autumn between 07:00 and 19:00. The source is the City of London Corporation.

A map of Greater London, England, showing the boundaries of all the London boroughs. The borough of the City of London is highlighted in red at the center of the map, just north of the River Thames. All other boroughs are shown in a light beige color with black borders. The River Thames and other bodies of water are depicted in light blue. The map provides a clear visual distinction of the City of London's central location relative to the other boroughs in Greater London. The map is from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_London
