I have some sympathy at the individual level, but I hate the sense that we as a society are increasingly just putting words together because of obligations or unexamined expectations, & because someone is trying to sell words by the pound, rather than because they communicate anything.

But what are those words for? Are they "what you felt about this person"? Then I want to hear YOUR words, however awkward. Are they "help everyone to remember the person"? Get a good writer to write something! (Pay a pro!) Who on earth wants the auto-generated average of a load of other eulogies?

I mean I find it weird when the answer to "people feel they're not qualified to write a good enough love letter" is "we should make sure someone can monetise that feeling of inadequacy, by stealing things & burning the planet", not "jesus fucking christ what do you even think communication is FOR".

You've got to ask what the words are _for_, haven't you. If the answer is "there just has to be words there, but nobody can/will write them" then I think the interesting question is not "where can I buy 2kg of words" but "WHY does nobody want to" (and "WHY does there have to be words there at all").
