How SIDS can enhance the Global Goal on Adaptation indicator process Global adaptation frameworks must ensure the priorities of Small Island Developing States are included by integrating tailored, context-specific adaptation indicators

Small Island Developing States (SIDS) are on the frontlines of climate impacts. To truly track #adaptation, the Global Goal on Adaptation must reflect SIDS' unique contexts. Read the highlights from a new policy briefing in our latest blog: climateanalytics.org/comment/how-...

If countries fail to come forward with targets aligned to the 1.5Β°C limit in new NDCs due this year, the #ICJ advisory opinion makes clear that they could face legal repercussions under customary international law.

A new approach for rethinking climate-related loss and damage in the Pacific The IKI-project β€œBuilding Our Loss and Damage Response” (BOLD) is developing innovative ways of recognising and responding to both economic and non-economic climate impacts.

How do you assess climate loss and damage that defies monetary valuation - like the loss of cultural heritage?

Our new @iki-germany.bsky.social project in the Pacific led by
SPREP combines modelling and domestic knowledge to try and answer these difficult questions and plan for the future.

The #ICJ opinion calls for ambitious climate plans. The third round of Nationally Determined Contributions are due this year. The #AdvisoryOpinion is a powerful reminder that countries must put forth ambitious, 1.5Β°C-aligned NDCs.

World on brink of climate breakthrough as fossil fuels β€˜run out of road’, UN chief says AntΓ³nio Guterres says β€˜sun is rising on a clean energy age’ as 90% of renewable power projects cheaper than fossil fuels

"Any investment in new fossil fuels now is a fool’s gamble, while joining the race to renewables can only bring benefits – not just jobs and cheaper energy at stable prices, but energy independence and access where it’s needed most", says @billhare.bsky.social on @theguardian.com.

According to the UN, less than $1 in 5 invested in clean energy has gone to emerging markets outside China since the Paris Agreement.

A plan to scale up climate finance at #COP30 will be key to ensuring developing regions like Africa benefit equally from the renewables revolution.

Emissions growth in 2024 was mostly driven by gas, with demand up 2.7%.

Gas is not a bridging fuel, investing in it now locks in outdated infrastructure.

Wannabe (and soon to be) COP hosts Brazil and Australia should know better and stop exploring for more oil and gas.

The success of renewables shows we can change our emissions trajectory - and fast.

But to keep the 1.5Β°C in reach, we need to move faster.

Governments should use their upcoming NDCs to supercharge this transition and stop working against it through fossil fuel subsidies.

Analysis: Clean energy just put China’s CO2 emissions into reverse for first time - Carbon Brief For the first time, the growth in China’s clean power generation has caused the nation’s carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to fall despite rapid power demand growth.

While energy demand grew 2.2% (faster than expected) last year, CO2 emissions growth slowed to 0.8%.

And the rise of clean energy looks to have set China’s emissions on a permanent downward trend, a key signal that global emissions may fall from next year.

As the UN report highlights, over the last decade, global renewable electricity capacity grew 140% (2,600 GW), while fossil fuel electricity capacity grew just 16% (640 GW).

As a result, global renewable and fossil fuel electricity capacity are already roughly equal.

Last year, electricity demand spiked due to:

πŸ₯΅ Extreme heat boosting A/C use
πŸš„ Increased manufacturing and transport electrification
πŸ’» New data centres/AI

Yet, investment in renewables vs. fossil fuels is now 2:1. Inevitably, renewables will force fossil fuels out of power.
