Measles is a very serious illness so please make sure that your children are vaccinated. I say this not only as a scientist but also as the mother of a child who is too young to be vaccinated and depends on everyone else taking the vaccine to keep him safe

The reason I say I have mixed feelings about this work is that we shouldn’t have to be modelling measles outbreaks in 2025. Measles was eliminated in 2000 in the US. We have a safe and effective vaccine that protects against measles.

Whats even more impressive is that our model really accurately forward predicts measles cases that occurred after our model was created (22 March 2025). Our model says that the measles situation is going to get worse before it gets better.

Whats really cool about this is that we can use historical cases of measles in the EU for feature selection (made possible by DTW), train on earlier cases of measles in the US and then have an incredibly accurate yet simple neural network that performs extremely well on our test data
