Today, Israel is perceived in a strikingly similar way—as another ghetto, a collective Jewish enclave set apart from the moral and political order of the world. When you read the foundational texts of antizionist ideology, this is always the core charge: that Jews, as a distinct nation, are unbearably “exclusive,” and therefore “racist.” There are other similarities as well. Both anti-Judaism and antizionism frame themselves as forms of ideology critique—as opposition to a belief system rather than to a people. In the medieval case, the target was Judaism; in the modern one, it is Zionism. What unites these two is their hostility to Jewish collectivity itself—the persistence of a separate moral, theological, or national body that resists absorption into universal humanity. In that respect, antizionism reproduces the anti-Judaism of earlier centuries far more closely than it does the racial logic of classical antisemitism.
