Warming winters are disrupting the hidden world of fungi β the result can shift mountain grasslands to scrub
Over a three-decade experiment in the Rocky Mountains, fungi and plant life fundamentally changed. The result has consequences for cattle and wildlife.
Disturbing results: with 2-degree increase "noticeably fewer beneficial mycorrhizal fungi, which left plants less able to acquire nutrients or buffer themselves from environmental stressors like freezing temperatures & drought"

It is morally wrong that people aren't allowed to protest against animal testing. For many people it is abhorrent cruelty, without protest how will the industry be kept in check? Who will speak up for the animals that suffer?

They are still a stunning bird to see, aren't they! There seems to be just one locally here that flies over occasionally. As it went over today, it really seemed to be doing some kind of display flight. I'm sure they do nest not far away.

I've been using some large terracotta trays for years, originally for under plant pots. They were cheap back then! In this weather I put an old Tuna can with holes drilled in sides (with care!) containing a tea light candle underneath to stop water freezing, at least for a while. Empty every night.

A flock of Bewick's Swans by Ben Cherry/WWT
π Our new paper shows Bewickβs Swan numbers in NW/NE Europe have fallen to ~12,900 birds - a 56.7% decline since 1995, with further losses predicted by 2026 unless survival or breeding success improves. Flyway-wide conservation is urgent. π¦’ Download paper > tidsskrift.dk/Wildfowl/art... #Ornithology
