So anytime I make a cheesecake or other impeccable food that I’ve dare say mastered, my husband wants to come up with a plan to monetize it. I just want to make delicious food for my family!

Forced obsolescence seems to be in the works. Proposed penalties for professional memberships, SLACs having oversight of librarians’ book orders, use of AI to β€œreview” books, and a lack of credentialing standards within the profession are all massive red flags for librarianship.

β€œIf there is any fixed star in our constitutional constellation, it is that no official, high or petty, can prescribe what shall be orthodox in politics, nationalism, religion, or other matters of opinion or force citizens to confess by word or act their faith therein.”  
Eighty-two years ago, during WW2, our Supreme Court issued these words.  Today, I still believe these words represent the promise of the very best of our country’s ideals.  Unfortunately, now, this is no longer the truth or the law of the land in Texas.  
Oxford English Dictionary defines the noun censor as β€œan official with the power to suppress…books…on the grounds of obscenity, seditiousness, etc.”  Four years ago, our elected officials, government employees, and some citizens worked in tandem to censor books at our local public library.  This is an inarguable fact.  
Because of the standing Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling, this act of censorship and others like it are now legal.  
On Monday morning, members of our commissioners’ court were photographed smiling and high-fiving when the order from SCOTUS was announced.  Kudos to our local journalists for capturing this apparent celebration.  
Supporters of censorship are found throughout the annals of history, throughout the world, and right here in our own backyard.  Read some books and you’ll find them, too.  My high school history teachers, librarians, and English teachers helped me find them, which is how I recognized them in my own hometown four years ago, and how I knew how to oppose them.  
I weep for the implications of this ruling.  
I thank those in the community who stand beside me and against censorship.  
I implore you all to both speak out and vote.  As Audre Lorde wrote, β€œYour silence will not protect you.”
