Guì Zhōu or Guìzhōu Shěng is a province located in the southwestern part of China. The Changjiao Miao people live in 12 villages near each other, situated in the mountains 2,000 meters above sea level, with a total population of 4,000. On a typical day, the women simply wrap their hair behind their heads around a sharp-ended wooden board. They wear the long horns only on holidays and during festivals, together with the decorative hair bun made of linen, wool, and small amounts of ancestral hair.

Ly Ta May is the oldest of three sisters. She is twenty-four years old. Her mother, Cheo, kindly helped Ly demonstrate putting on her wedding dress that was handed down from mother to daughter. The Red Dao wedding dress is seen as the summit of success in a women’s sewing accomplishments. Mother and daughter are known to spend up to a year making nothing else but a brand-new ceremonial outfit in preparation for the big day.

Plastic tub full of handspun yarns

Final #TourDeFleece tally: 546m over 10 different yarns! All of my yarns are DK or thicker with a few bulky so less length, more thickness. My handspun yarn tub is getting pretty full!

It’s looking gorgeous so far!

A short sleeved handknitted sweater hangs out on the back porch. It has a multicolored yoke, blue and green zigzag accents and a tweedy forest green main body and sleeves. It was a delight to knit.

The Tours de France ( both hommes and femmes) have concluded, and so has the knitting of the Astro pop tee by Marie Greene! All supplies from @yarnfolk.com 🧶

I used an i-cord gadget, I saw someone else on here use one to make yarn and I had to try it myself.

I forgot to share this before, this is the last yarn of #TourDeFleece 2025. 2 stitch I-cord (lucette) with beads added every 10 rounds. It takes extra time to add the beads but it’s so pretty!

The legendary beauty of Bani Thani, a one-of-a-kind concubine of Raja Sawant Singh of Kishangarh (who reigned from 1748-1757), was most famously captured by Indian artist and poet Nihâl Chand in this iconic painting at the National Museum in New Delhi. Chand’s depiction combined the aesthetics of side-profile Mughal portraiture with the exaggerated features of Indian statuary. It is suggested that the enlarged eyes of his portrait may have taken inspiration from the symbolic importance of eyes in Indian poetry and ritual. The distinctive features of Chand’s rendering of Bani Thani can be seen on Kishangarh paintings throughout the remainder of the 18th century, often transfigured into the Hindu deity Radha. Bani Thani is depicted with a serene and elegant demeanor showcasing detailed ornamentation, including jewelry and clothing, reflecting the Rajput royal style. She has elegant and graceful features, rather stylized, including arched eyebrows, lotus-like elongated eyes and pointed chin. Born as Vishnupriya, she was a singer employed by the stepmother of Raja Sawant Singh in Kishangarh and he was drawn to Vishnupriya because of her beauty and singing. She came to be known as “Bani Thani” — which loosely means “the decked out lady” — because of the exquisite jewelry and makeup that she adorned herself with after becoming queen. Both lovers died in the 1760s. Today, they have twin chhatris (elevated, dome-shaped memorials) dedicated to them near the Nagari Kunj temple in Vrindavan. Due to its iconic status and captivating beauty, this painting has been hailed by some as the “Mona Lisa of India.” It was featured on an Indian postage stamp issued May 5, 1973.

Three twisted hanks of yarn on green grass. Two of the hanks are two-ply, one white and one purple-pink thread. The colour changes a lot in the yarn. The third hank is chain plied yarn using only the pink-purple thread.

My Tour de Fleece spins. One of the hanks is more tightly wound. They both have about 111 g in them (3.9 oz?), but one has ~15 meters more yarn. So quite even for me. The third hank is the excess pink thread, chain plied.

Pacific-northwest U.S. artist Zama Vanessa Helder (aka Z. Vanessa Helder) depicts fellow American female artist Blanche Morgan Losey seated in a dark wooden chair at a small, square, red table. She was a member of the Women Painters of Washington, the Northwest Watercolor Society, and the National Association of Women Artists in New York. During the 1930s and ’40s, she worked in the precisionist style—hard-edged, clean-lined watercolors that focused on design, color, and form. Losey lived multiple artistic lives: in addition to her watercolors and WPA work, she was the director of Frederick & Nelson’s interior design department for more than 20 years in post-WWII Seattle.
