staging their final riot.

The world spins and I am expected to smile
through sweat and rage—
a phoenix in yoga pants,
burning,
just longing
for the mercy
of an afternoon nap.

In Celtic lore, blackthorn trees were feared—said to shelter spirits who cursed the unworthy. Travelers gave wide berth in winter, when the thorns bit hardest. Those who honored the tree’s power, though, found unexpected protection on their journeys.
