No Kings had our local activist groups seen a surge of new members, many of whom canvassed today for Mamdani and other progressives. We're working with Free DC to prepare for potential deployment of the National Guard. What are you doing?

Because she started strong and then slowly backed off the price controls, hid Tim Walz, stopped calling MAGA "weird", and worse wouldn't break with Israel. That's on her.

It's for this reason that I find accusations of cynicism lobbed at me for writing essays like this one, for example, to be missing the point. It's a fundamental optimism, rooted in realism rather than liberal disavowal, that motivates critiques like this.

Only then can we truly begin the work of reconstruction—not by appealing to a liberal moral order that no longer exists, but by building new forms of solidarity, care, and shared material life that can give appeals to democracy actual substance.

To move forward, and to meaningfully resist fascism, we must confront that breakdown directly: to feel it, name it, and take responsibility for what has been lost and what must be done.

02.11.2025 17:46 — 👍 11 🔁 1 💬 1 📌 0🧵 A classic psychoanalytic phenomenon, "fear of breakdown," helps convey why it's essential––if we're to beat back fascism––to understand Trump not as the cause of democracy's destruction but rather as a symptom of it. We are on the edge of the breakdown of democracy, liberals say. Unity, not...
02.11.2025 17:46 — 👍 23 🔁 6 💬 1 📌 1It’s ridiculous to see the decline in trans kids coming out as anything other than them repressing due to fear. And that is what the GOP wants. They want conformity. A few may actually believe in the contagion theory but most just want queer people ashamed as they are by their own desires.
02.11.2025 17:55 — 👍 10 🔁 0 💬 0 📌 0Obama is younger than most Democratic senators. He spun his presidency into becoming quite wealthy after many of his policies - bailing out the banks, refusing to prosecute Dubya for war crimes, legalizing drone strikes - set the stage for Trump. So yeah he owes us.
02.11.2025 17:51 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0Stopping Project 2025 wasn’t the goal of No Kings. You’re judging it by a goal you invented for it. The goal was to change the narrative around Trump having unchecked power, demonstrate mass disapproval of the regime and engage the public. It did all of those things.
