The internet was never a perfect place, but at least a lot of these media companies gave a darn about kids and gave them safe, fun spaces to be fully entertained online.

Alas, this generation will never have that experience. Maybe those that had these places will bring them back for the next one.

Finished up! I feel like I learned a lot about metal shading with this one. Are there any art skills you struggle with?

Most of the internet used to be like this. This is actually the default, it took companies enclosing the internet and adding weird, soul-killing incentives to make people behave the way they do now. In a way, there is truly nothing special about Wikipedia except that it survived longer.

As a reminder: LLMs are not intelligent beings. You are providing an input to an algorithm that calculates, in a very complicated way, the probability in which words will follow each other in response to your input based on whatever data was used to train the algorithm.

The algorithm doesn't think.

Advocates for AI say it's just another tool, and you can't blame tools for how they're used.

Listen, I don't blame hammers just because they might be used to hurt people. But if I found out that the factory making hammers relied on hurting people as its business model, yeah, I'd stop using hammers.

"Here's a gaming one for you, since that's a hobby. I find it very, VERY funny that Gamers(tm) will complain that shit like Sweet Baby Rays or whatever the fuck it is is ruining gaming with woke when it's very obvious that the games industry is already just flinging itself to bits with massively overinflated AAAA budgets, large game companies eating smaller studios like fucking potato chips, a concerted effort by game companies to start using AI slop, and a greater push to squash all creativity under the boot heel of corporate interest.
But no, it's the fact that there's a black guy in Assassin's Creed that's the real problem."

plaque at a local museum. "No girl, unless she knows how to run an auto, knows how it makes you feel, to push one thing, pull another and start a machine to moving that weighs so many more times the amount she does. Sort of a thrill, an uplifted feeling as though you were doing something wonderful. You are, too! Fancy moving something that weighs TONS by a few twists and turns. I held my breath for fear something would happen."

This is why I still think that the internet, not the issues, are the root cause of this culture war. People (including journalists…who are people) imagine the loudest, angriest positions as default positions because those are the ones that get eyeballs in an ultra-competitive attention economy.

On the anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, we thought we'd answer a question that's often asked,

"If they raised the Mary Rose, why not raise the Titanic?"

Allow our scaled diagram to explain...

Microsoft bought skype in 2011, shoved it full of ads, forced cortana into it, added premium paid features while disabling stuff people liked, and eventually drove its millions of users to a competitor.

Will the next megacorpo learn when discord eventually goes for sale? Doubtful.

All 3 seasons of Dark

Finally! DARK on blu-ray. It's one of the best science fiction series of all time. Smart, sometimes sad, but always beautiful. Yes, it's currently on Netflix, but I don't trust those fuckers not to pull it.
