Microalgae underpin some of the ocean’s most iconic symbioses, most notably with reef-building corals. Yet, sailing the high seas is a new symbiosis. Using a series of advanced imaging techniques, we provide the first look at this previously undescribed partnership. Despite convergence of the cnidarian–algal relationship, unique morphological localization indicates an independently evolved, biologically novel endosymbiotic strategy different from all known symbioses. Amazingly, these sailing cnidarians seem analogous to an autonomous greenhouse fueling its reproductive medusoid stages for life in the open ocean.

A sea cucumber with a cylindrical tapered greenish body covered with large pointy orange welts rests on the sea floor.
Sea cucumber whose orange-brown body is studded with pointy yellow-orange nipple-like welts.
A half-buried white sea cucumber everts the feeding tentacles from its head region. The tentacles are busy and with many complex branchings.
One reason I take so many sea cucumber photos is they don't run away from me, but there's something enticing about a creature that resembles an unfortunate sausage and feeds with tentacles that look like the diagram of a complex nervous system. 🦑 #oceans #Scuba #diving #pacificnorthwest #echinoderm

My photo shows a ‘roaring’ hippo statuette made of Egyptian blue faience, a ceramic material made of ground quartz. The hippo is seated with head at left, and turned to front. The hippo’s original tusks (top incisors and lower canine teeth are known as tusks), are missing, so it looks as if the hippo is smiling. The blue body is decorated in black with Nile river plants such as water weed and lotus flowers. This decoration depicts the hippo’s marsh habitat as well as having layers of symbolism associated with regeneration e.g. lotus flowers open with the sun in the morning and close at night symbolising rebirth. Height 7.5 cm, length 12.5 cm. On display Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, Copenhagen.
