Finally saw this for the first time a few years ago. Everybody in the movie is in a horrible mood and completely awesome. Loved it.

22.01.2026 07:00 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Had this on my shelf for a few years and was kind of annoyed when I found out the new Park is based on this, since now I had to decide if I read the book first (which I intend) or prioritize the movie. And like everybody else I highly recommend the Parker novels.
30.12.2025 07:43 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This one feels very much underrated to me, but I should probably add that it was my first encounter with Robinson (apart from memes, I guess). Enjoyed this more than most of the 'big' titles of 2025.
30.12.2025 07:38 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I made the effort to find a theater where I could see the new "Avatar" in regular frame rate after fleeing the theater after 15 minutes with part 2 a few years ago. Maybe (!) I could get used to the HFR look if it was constant throughout the whole film, but the switches made it unwatchable to me.
23.12.2025 07:06 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If HFR was only used in the 3D showings, it could be easily avoided, but there are definitelty also 2D versions with the constant switching. I learned this the hard way with the last movie and fled the theater after 15 minutes of being very distracted, I just couldn't focus on the movie itself.
20.12.2025 06:43 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I seem to remember an interview with Pantera from the 90s (when the term 'metal' itself seemed unfashionable for a while) where the band called their own style 'power groove'. (Was probably on Headbanger's Ball, and I don't know why I even have this recollection.)
08.11.2025 07:39 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0A while ago you mentioned AHAB, now BOHREN, so I just have to ask if you are familiar with MESSA from Italy...?

03.10.2025 05:48 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0If it's the book I'm thinking about, the reveal is even in the very last sentence, as far as I remember. A co-worker reading Willeford sounds amazing to me anyway. (I did manage to turn a friend into a fan at least.)
20.08.2025 04:47 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I've seen nearly nothing by Flanagan (except for Oculus and Dr. Sleep, both pretty meh), and I haven't yet really understood what this one even is, but that description is an all timer, haha!
13.06.2025 16:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Doesn't feel like anybody mentioned this even once in the last 25 years, but this must have been one of the few available animes back in the day, because I definitely know it by name. Never saw it, but sometimes yesterday's trash feels like today's treasure.
19.05.2025 16:35 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This is what a movie should look like
13.02.2025 01:08 β π 124 π 12 π¬ 3 π 1I had pretty high expectations, but still wasn't prepared. Stunning movie, deeply disturbing.
26.01.2025 07:20 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Seeing this without any knowledge what kind of movie it was (apart from featuring a chainsaw) - and streaming it via the mediathek of 'arte' of all places - was such a rush. Loved it.
25.01.2025 07:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0How I hate to agree. Never really exciting, but especially the second half was such a drag. By far the worst of the three films with the title "Nosferatu" and by far the worst Eggers (whose other films I like). Still a bit bummed about it.
05.01.2025 10:33 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Still from the 1929 film "Days of Youth" by Yasujiro Ozu. It shows the back of a sitting man wearing a jacket that says "Smack Front Only" in a cool font.
Early example of a cool movie jacket.
04.12.2024 13:46 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0There seem to be quite a few people who liked it more on their second watch, so maybe this will also be your reaction. To me it's a masterpiece (and also the only movie of the last 10 or 15 years I just had to see twice in theaters). I think time will be very kind to it.
23.11.2024 07:52 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I agree that nearly every single scene could probably be shorter without losing much, but to my surprise it still worked pretty good for me, even in its bloated form. But then I'm still kind of surprised how much I like those movies in general (haven't seen part 3 yet though).
12.11.2024 08:23 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0That was my first (and probably still most enjoyable) encounter with Reese Witherspoon.
08.11.2024 06:20 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0This feels like a good opportunity to thank you for all the great literature that I discovered through your blog or your twitter account. Checked out Robert Aickman and Nathan Balingrud because of your writing. Also I probably never would have read Robinsons astonishing "Housekeeping". Best wishes!
13.05.2024 06:48 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Saw this on the big screen in 1996 at a German festival and was floored. Bought a (single) DVD with this one and the sequel a few years later, but I don't even dare checking the quality of that thing today. So this is very welcome - thanks!
27.01.2024 08:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Very nice, thank you. I saw Hen for the first time recently and really enjoyed it. I actually think that the melodrama and the typical Ozu-style make quite an interesting combination, and at least for me they don't cancel each other out at all. (The same could be said for The Munekata Sisters.)
13.12.2023 07:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Holy shit, really? I finally saw this last year thanks to your Hark-folder after being interested in it since the 90s. Probably my favourite of his (although I'm very far from knowing all of his films), so angry and gripping! A complete version of this in good quality would be amazing!
13.12.2023 07:28 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I just saw it (on Blu-ray) about two weeks ago for the first time. Really a special film with a winning combination of being disturbing and also unexpectedly funny (Donald Pleasance!) and even tragic.
25.10.2023 06:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Haven't seen this in many, many years (and I wasn't even aware there were different versions, I think), but I always liked it a lot. Remember it as being wonderfully insane.
15.10.2023 05:37 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0The MoC releases were also simply much easier to afford than Criterion discs (especially if there was some kind of sale). Which resulted in quite a few MoC releases that I've owned for many years but still haven't seen, since they have literally been obscured by a second row of discs on my shelf...
11.10.2023 10:12 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I saw this just a few months ago for the first time (it doesn't seem very well known here in Germany), and I can't imagine watching this and not loving everybody in it. Absolutely wonderful.
