BTS named their new album Arirang. What is so striking about their choice? The title is loaded with meaning for all Koreans, and will give fans globally an insight into the folksong culture that shaped the world’s biggest K-pop group

Following on from my earlier thread about claims of β€œbias” in universities (link below πŸ‘‡), I was struck by James Marriott’s column in today’s Times. It’s full of anecdote & caricature. The real story of UK universities is structural, financial, and political. 🧡

Listening to Rest is Politics, Rest is Politics US, and reading respected commentators, it's striking how 'left-wing bias' in universities is now taken for granted. That matters, especially in the US, where academia faces political attack. Thoughts from having worked in US/UK universities. 🧡

We marched through London against mass migration. Were no racists People at Saturday's Unite the Kingdom say the majority of attendees were peaceful protesters worried about the state of the country

In the 1930s Mosley and his rank and file BUF were careful not to outwardly portray themselves as racists.

They weren't antisemitic... far from it... they were just concerned about "bad principles" and "international bankers" and the influx of foreigners

Everyone knew what they meant.

If you wrap yourself in national flags and go on a fascist march with violent thugs… you shouldn’t be validated by our media.
It was a march for racism, for radicalised prejudice, for mass deportations and for threat against ethnic minorities. It was an ugly expression of division.
Shameful.

Bear with me, I anticipate your disagreement. There is a clear pattern to the advice given to those who want to press back against rising racism. What it boils down to is that if you point out that racism is often being dressed up as β€œlegitimate concerns” you will alienate people. /1

We need to listen to what Trump and Vance are telling us. This may have been the biggest moment for European security since 1991.

Have written about JD Vance’s Munich speech. In what may prove to be the biggest week for European security since 1991, it’s time Europe listened to what Trump and his Vice President are telling us. open.substack.com/pub/goodalla...

Broadcasters who repeated this obvious bollocks are not required to make any correction or apologise to their listeners/viewers. And I saw at least two columnists making hay with it. They too will retract nothing.

Brexit cheerleaders have gone awfully quiet – so let me remind you what they did to Britain If we do talk about it, we start to recognise the gulf between their words and reality

When something is a success, people like to associate themselves with it. So it's noticeable how quiet the Brexiters are.

Many of us are echoing @timothysnyder.bsky.social's lesson in On Tyranny, "Do not obey in advance.”

A no less vital admonition that deserves attn:

STAND OUT

β€œ...without that unease, there is no freedom. The moment you set an example, the spell of the status quo is broken, and others will follow."

Isn’t this cosy? Badenoch and the pompous Clarkson foghorn having a fireside chat about how the Tories will help tax-dodging wealthy landowners like him.

God knows what she thinks her own govt did to *all* our communities, including rural ones.
Or to the public services that our taxes pay for.

It feels like Labour's decision to cut winter fuel payments is a huge mistake.

In the bigger picture, it won't save that much. Not compared to overall government spending.

But it gives RW media and opposition parties a v big stick to beat Labour with, and causes internal rifts.
