A few years ago I was at a meet and greet conference between civil society, home office reps and the porn industry on the topic of AV.

I asked the panel to clarify "once you have ageverified somebody, you will never have to do it again (£££) because they don't get younger, right?"

They laughed.

That will often work. For now. Until they turn-on VPN checks.

First, it’s easier to detect VPN usage than you might think; and secondly it may not simplify be where you are connecting from that matters — they may have geolocated the country you were in when you signed-up and are using that to determine the ‘need’ to age-verify 🙄

We need a term that describes digital policy proposals that erroneously position technology as a magic solution. This week has been a week for it: age verification and digital ID are both white elephants that meet the "something must be done!" test without solving the underlying problem.

Need to vent completely understood.

Assistance—well, possibly vaguely helpful suggestions—available if required 🙂

I’m very much in two minds about this (not BSky in particular). As a general concept it has some value, but probably not as much as its proponents wish, and downsides which they refuse to consider. 🤷🏻‍♂️

It seems like the soldier involved thought they had a spreadsheet with 125 or so named people they were dealing with. Apparently there was a hidden tab they didnt know about with the full list. The two culprits here: who decided to use Excel as a case management system, and who hid the tab
