Going back over it… Lots of hard hitting scenes, the most disturbing being Moctezuma’s vicious treatment of Little Cousin followed closely by Atotoxtli’s graphic vision of her own death. Cortes’s treatment of Malinalli is pretty brutal too. Definitely the most unusual novel I’ve read this year. 🐴

Loved the scene where Moctezuma and the priest are listening to T Rex coming from Enrigue’s room across time. Enjoyed the buffoonery more than the violence.

What’s wild about You Dreamed of Empires is how Enrigue inserts himself and the reader into the narrative through the hallucinations of Moctezuma and Cortes, speculating on a counterfactual history of Mexico City starting with their consequential meeting at Tenochtitlan in 1519.
