My timeline is all Aurora right now and I am so envious.

Part of the larger influence of scarcity mindsets among upper-middle class white families who privilege hoard—“my kids need to learn the best way to read.”

And the reality that schools are so under-resourced that they mis-serve a lot of kids. Parents see this and reading is a convenient boogeyman.

Someone upthread mentioned Animorphs! My kids loved those when they were younger.

My first encounter with P&P was in a college English class called Comedy. Talk about how framing impacts how you read a book. I re-read it every year or so and it's been wonderful to feel it change over decades. But I still find a lot of it deeply funny.

I had read The Poisonwood Bible (and taught it) and it wasn't my fav. I picked up Animal, Vegetable, Miracle because I'm into gardening and feel in love with her nonfiction prose. I need to re-read.

Oh, these were totally around. I don't even remember the ones I read, but I remember how well they fit in my hand and how satisfying that was.

I was so excited to introduce my kids to this. They still think I'm a bit weird for my love of it, but I'm 100% okay with that.

I'm going to use this thread in conversations from now until forever. I'm going to revisit the thread and love on all the stories. Thank you.

There's a lot that Emily Hanford doesn't say in her reporting on SoR. Research on reading points to the complexity, nuance, contextuality, and diverse influences on becoming a successful reader. This is a great overview of a few of the issues with how journalists frame Science of Reading.

I taught The Things They Carried to juniors at a Catholic, all-girls HS. It is the only book they almost all read. The discussions were the absolute best. The language in that book sings.

Oh, and Hope in the Dark by Rebecca Solnit. Love. her sentences. And the insistent tone, keep going.

I went through a deep Vonnegut phase in my mid-20s when I lived in Indiana and taught HS English. Slaughterhouse 5 was irreverent about awful things in a way that didn't lessen the awful and also spoke to my Midwestern soul.

This book has my whole heart. I also read it as an adult. I need to re-read it. I love all of his books. Because I read them as an adult, they have each invited me into thinking about how I parent my own children.

I should never be surprised when big tech makes bad decisions, but I can also still be big mad about it.

CITATIONS! Omg, yes. Like, yes, Google Scholar kinda works, and Zotero kinda works… But a system that could actually clean up hiccups and convert from one to another, get capitalization right? I’d pay so much money. And then my editors could spend time on my prose!
