12.11.2025 04:01 β π 18 π 2 π¬ 0 π 0Part of the larger influence of scarcity mindsets among upper-middle class white families who privilege hoardββmy kids need to learn the best way to read.β
And the reality that schools are so under-resourced that they mis-serve a lot of kids. Parents see this and reading is a convenient boogeyman.

Bahahahaβ¦yes, the fuzz knitting itself!
12.11.2025 03:31 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0For the past few years, I have partnered with @blackbirdletterpress.com around this time of year on a handmade notebook. Proceeds support REBUILD. I am so excited to share this year's notebook inspired by Gwendolyn Brooks's words. www.blackbirdletterpress.com/limited-edit... - limited edition
11.11.2025 14:44 β π 115 π 42 π¬ 4 π 0Someone upthread mentioned Animorphs! My kids loved those when they were younger.
12.11.2025 02:24 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0My first encounter with P&P was in a college English class called Comedy. Talk about how framing impacts how you read a book. I re-read it every year or so and it's been wonderful to feel it change over decades. But I still find a lot of it deeply funny.
12.11.2025 02:23 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0I had read The Poisonwood Bible (and taught it) and it wasn't my fav. I picked up Animal, Vegetable, Miracle because I'm into gardening and feel in love with her nonfiction prose. I need to re-read.
12.11.2025 02:17 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Oh, these were totally around. I don't even remember the ones I read, but I remember how well they fit in my hand and how satisfying that was.
12.11.2025 02:15 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I was so excited to introduce my kids to this. They still think I'm a bit weird for my love of it, but I'm 100% okay with that.
12.11.2025 02:14 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I'm going to use this thread in conversations from now until forever. I'm going to revisit the thread and love on all the stories. Thank you.
12.11.2025 02:12 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Oh, and this "Drawing on data from a critical metaphor analysis... we demonstrate how frames used in recent media reporting have intensified the reading wars, promoting conflict and hampering conversation among stakeholders and across research paradigms and methodologies."
(DM and I'll send)
And "We reveal ways in which educational journalism uses metaphor to align the βscience of readingβ with values and beliefs held by conservative Christian religious groups...media related to these religious values, in a political environment where extremism flourishes, loses focus on the child."
12.11.2025 02:10 β π 5 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There's a lot that Emily Hanford doesn't say in her reporting on SoR. Research on reading points to the complexity, nuance, contextuality, and diverse influences on becoming a successful reader. This is a great overview of a few of the issues with how journalists frame Science of Reading.
12.11.2025 02:10 β π 12 π 3 π¬ 1 π 1Excellent catch! Size 14 needles for the lace. And it would have been an XS.
12.11.2025 01:55 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0I taught The Things They Carried to juniors at a Catholic, all-girls HS. It is the only book they almost all read. The discussions were the absolute best. The language in that book sings.
Oh, and Hope in the Dark by Rebecca Solnit. Love. her sentences. And the insistent tone, keep going.
I went through a deep Vonnegut phase in my mid-20s when I lived in Indiana and taught HS English. Slaughterhouse 5 was irreverent about awful things in a way that didn't lessen the awful and also spoke to my Midwestern soul.

11.11.2025 23:37 β π 12 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0This book has my whole heart. I also read it as an adult. I need to re-read it. I love all of his books. Because I read them as an adult, they have each invited me into thinking about how I parent my own children.
11.11.2025 23:36 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I should never be surprised when big tech makes bad decisions, but I can also still be big mad about it.
11.11.2025 21:13 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0CITATIONS! Omg, yes. Like, yes, Google Scholar kinda works, and Zotero kinda worksβ¦ But a system that could actually clean up hiccups and convert from one to another, get capitalization right? Iβd pay so much money. And then my editors could spend time on my prose!
11.11.2025 20:51 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Someone asked me if Iβd knit them a mohair lace bolero I was wearing. I said, βSure! $800.β And they just gaped.

11.11.2025 19:05 β π 1762 π 61 π¬ 15 π 0Report launch graphic for MediaJustice's newest report, "The People Say No: Resisting Data Centers in the South." The graphic is divided in two sides: on the left we have a sort of environmental utopia with wide canyons and folks in a canoe going by a stream. On the right we have the alternative, rows of data center equipment with endless wiring.
TODAY, we're launching The People Say No: Resisting Data Centers in the South, our report dedicated to exposing data center harms in the South and how our people are fighting back.
