Wilderlab gains ISO accreditation, launches new diet kit, and more
Welcome to the December 2024 edition of the eDNA extract. Weโre happy to share some exciting updates with you as we wind up another immense year of eDNA development and discovery:
Merry Christmas #eDNA friends! Here's a snippet of what we've been up to at #Wilderlab, including sponsoring community projects, launching new diet kits, and getting ISO 17025 acredited

๐ #NewStudy: DiBattista et al. used #eDNA to examine seasonal variation of fish and other species on a tropical coral #reef.
The richness of #fish species on the reef was highest in early spring (September ๐), and early autumn (February ๐ชธ) for cnidarians and sponges.

๐งฌ๐ it makes me happy to see #eDNA being rolled at scale. Well played Maarten De Brauwer and NSW government for the 1000+ samples in 2024. Kudos to #wilderlab for powering these kinds of studies. Looking forward to see the impact of eDNA in 2025. ๐งฌ๐

Since then we have generated 22,494 TICI scores from around New Zealand, gaining a vivid picture of stream condition and #biodiversity across the country. SCIENCE! ๐

We have no idea which species many of these sequences belong to - but the average indicator value of the TICI sequences found in a sample gives an accurate measure of stream health...

The TICI, or taxon-independent community index, uses a learning algorithm to assign 'indicator values' to each of 3,000 commonly-detected eDNA sequences...

Thanks @whysharksmatter.bsky.social I'd love to share this paper from earlier this year. We used tree-of-life #metabarcoding to train an #eDNA health index for rivers and streams, that doesn't rely on a reference database...

The TICI (taxonomy-independent community index) paper from the Wilderlab is out!
Correlate metabarcoding ASVs with invertebrate measurements from New Zealand rivers -> find which ASVs are linked with river health, generate a score from there!
