Don’t mess with physics
Gather ‘round, my friends, because this one is important! A few years ago, we released our Global maps of soil temperature – a project that brought climate data much closer to the conditions …
Did we rewrite the laws of physics - or did our ML model predict things that are physically impossible?
Tomas Uxa just published a Commentary on our 'Global maps of soil temp', arguing the latter
I break down the what, the how, and the what next here 👇

This is how scientific discourse should operate. A respectful + insightful comment by Tomas Uxa on the limits of ML from @jlembrechts.bsky.social's high-impact paper, yet still celebrating it. In return, Jonas applauds Tomas for his detective work. Well done, Tomas and Jonas! A model for us all.

Very happy to share this new article on Andes-Amazon tree diversity change. We found that over the last 4 decades, tree richness changed differently across the Andes-Amazon regions. Thanks to the many researchers across the world who made this possible!

Fascinating study on shifting bioclimatic conditions in the Arctic 🌍❄️. From a Swedish perspective 🇸🇪, it’s striking how much of the Scandes have become drier 🌵📉— and extreme events are becoming increasingly common ⚠️🔥. #ClimateChange #Arctic

A new era of bioclimatic extremes in the terrestrial Arctic
Long-term climate data suggest that the Arctic is entering a new era of bioclimatic extremes threatening cold ecosystems.
Climate change has already reshaped the bioclimatic space of extreme events in the Arctic 🌐❄️ Arctic biodiversity has entered a new era of bioclimatic extremes w/ more droughts, greater winter-warming 📈 & more rain-on-snow events 💧❄️

We revealed that species range shift studies globally tend to have a geographic set-up that facilitates the detection of poleward movements, as expected with warming. This leads to the perception that poleward, warming-driven range shifts predominate.
