With a trillion dollars per year you could probably tackle all of these quite well.

This of course is the amount of money sent to Israel to commit genocide from 2023-2024. And thatโ€™s not even that much compared to nearly 1 trillion for the military more broadly.

How many amazing space telescopes could we have if we had a budget of 18 billion dollars per year?

And so much great science that wonโ€™t get selectedโ€ฆ. Sad to think of the scarcity of science resources compared to the vast supply of money used to kill children that were born the wrong skin colorโ€ฆ makes ya think

What a joke. These awards have no value and this proves it. If all someone needs to do to earn this shit is to drag people into debates and be super annoying then I should have dozens. But tbf to Kirk you have to also be misogynistic, racist, and transphobic to get it from the current administration

Samuel Mehr: "Moving control of science funding decisions away from the experts and toward government ministers is a recipe for under-informed funding decisions that are likely to be biased by external influence, whatever topics are currently exciting (but donโ€™t necessarily have any long-term value)

Itโ€™s really hard trying to be a fan of Irish soccerโ€ฆ they just suck so much. Even wins feel like losses when you can barely get past a 10-man Armenian team.

A fellow cat rescuer spotted a homeless group kindly sharing their lunch with a starving, matted senior cat under a highway. Now named Expresso, this 12+ year-old deaf dynamo is thriving despite kidney disease and past injuries. Sheโ€™s in our Special Adoption Programโ€”fee waived, care covered.

Well said @irishrainforest.bsky.social - Leddin must not have paid attention to recent speeches from the Taoiseach and government (in)action.

Meanwhile, the EPA tells us today that water quality in our rivers and lakes has deteriorated again.

Ex-Green TD Brian Leddin is leaving the Greens over the party's support for "far left" Connolly, and voting for Fine Gael's Humphreys as president.

He believes climate and ecological breakdown are not left-right issues.

He's very wrong: *capitalism* is their core driver.

Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.

lol liars, every one. Chicago cops threatened to quit if Brandon Johnson was elected mayor. Police union leader LITERALLY threatened "blood in the streets," saying between 800 to 1,000 would walk.

Guess what never happened.

And even if they'd made good on that threat... OK??? BYE????

I suggest reading Service Model by @aptshadow.bsky.social because even this promise coming true will create a horrible future for us.

The rich will destroy the world if we continue to let them.

A comic strip in six panels. The panels inerlock like a jigsaw with knobs and sockets. Two stick figures walk right to left through all the panels.

Panel 1: Person 1 says "I hear you're working on a new theory."
Panel 2 & 3: Person 2 says: "Yes, I'm calling it the jigsaw model. I think it could change our whole View of reality."
Panel 4: Person 1 says "When Will you publish?:
Panel 5: Person 2 says "But a couple of things are still bothering me." (this piece/panel is a bit squint)
Panel 6: This piece is rotated ninety degees and fits to the others very badly. Person 2 is saying "Soon. I feel like I'm really close"
A second look at the whole comic shows that the last two panels read in the wrong order because the jigsaw has been put together incorrectly.

North America Nebula. Lots of red because of all of the hydrogen gas.

The universe is too fucking fabulous for capitalism, y'all!

Last night's evidence:
1. North America Nebula (1 hour)
2. Andromeda (20 min)
3. Pac-Man Nebula (15 min)

The universe is basically just hydrogen, dark matter, and dark energy. Plus trillions upon trillions of perturbations lol

As an aside, "Excellence" must be the single-most overused, empty, boilerplate word used in academic bureaucracy and it's typically a stand-in for "We don't know what we want so you should do everything".

They risk upsetting the multinationals. They risk upsetting the capitalists. This is neoliberalism. These people care more about capitalism and profit than their ideals (and often mistake those motives AS ideals). They will sell out the future of the planet to ensure the rich get richer.

So at first I thought it was hilarious that a Venezuelan won the peace prize but then I found out sheโ€™s a capitalist who wants to privatize everything (including oil) and has publicly thanked Trump for his โ€œcommitment to freedom and democracy in Venezuelaโ€. Iโ€™m not impressed.

It really can't be said enough: the goal of the "anti-woke" movement was always to destroy social norms against bigotry. And it worked. And there's a whole lot of purportedly "left" thinkers & commentators who helped it -- indeed, it couldn't have been done without them.

They should feel bad.

This is honestly the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time- banning the use of the words burger & sausage on plant based products.

The world is burning & war ravaged, & this is what our Parliamentarians think they need to 'fix'?

Joseph Barranco posted on social media: Go Bears! Nobel Prize in Physics goes to 3 physicists studying mesoscopic quantum phenomena... Work was done in the 1980s in UC Berkeley Professor John Clarke's lab with his graduate student John Martinis and postdoctoral fellow Michel Devoret... all 3 share the Nobel Prize. Must also point out that both Clarke and Devoret are immigrants from the UK and France, respectively. All 3 are pioneers in the race to build the most powerful quantum supercomputers. California *public* education made this happen. Immigration made this happen.

Valuable info about the Physics Nobel Prize today from Prof. Joseph Barranco at SFSU on Martinis and Devoret being a grad student and postdoc in Clarke's lab at UC Berkeley & Clark and Devoret being immigrants. "California *public* education made this happen. Immigration made this happen." โš›๏ธ
