Judith Butler Primarily a philosopher of gender who writes in the language of Jewish ethics when convient, Butler inverts the tradition in order to legitimize violence against Israelis. Rather than ciritiquing particular policies or governments, her work uses Jewish moral categories to argue that Jewish state power is ilegitimate in principle. Butler famously claimed that Hezobollah and Hamas are part of the global left and supported the October 7th genocide.

Amos Goldberg Goldberg is an Israeli Holocaust historian who usually writes about memory and trauma, not the legal meaning of genocide. But in a 2024 article in the Journal of Genocide Research - a leading outlet for scholars advancing the genocide libel - he acknowledge a basic problem: te claim that Israel is "inherently genocidal", based on the settler-colonial theory, does not fit the Genocide Convention, which requires proof of intent. Still the Israeli NGO B'Tselem cites Goldberg in its own genocide report, built on the same framework. Even when scholars admit these problems in academic journals, the public hears only the accusation, not the underlying contradictions.

Schindler's List was about 600 people who don't.” I had to think about that line while watching this film, which tells the story of a family trying to get their daughter (and her husband) back from Gaza, where they are being held hostage after being captured in Oct. 2023. Sure, a situation such as this is every parent's nightmare, but that the film tells this story with barely a word about all the other losses felt extremely insensitive. At the very least, I would have hoped that the Berlinale would have programmed a film telling a similar story from the Palestinian perspective -- so as to create a dialogue of sorts (something new festival head Tricia Tuttle said the festival was all about). But no, we had this film plus the even more propagandistic A LETTER TO DAVID. Nothing from or about Gaza (save for a doc about a kid from Gaza who does Parkour). That this won the best documentary award at the Berlinale -- and from a jury of documentary filmmakers I admire, no less -- says so much about the politics of the festival, and the ways in extremes in which they will go to undo the "incident" that happened in 2024 when NO OTHER LAND won top prize. Given how practically all voices against genocide or support of the innocent lives lost in Gaza are silenced here in Berlin (look at what happened last week when Francesca Albanese was meant to speak) I have little interest in seeing a film that shows a happy ending for one family's daughter while over 17,000 parents are grieving just a few kilometers away from Liat's kibbutz. 95 likes
