This is part of the global commitment to strengthen the protection and sustainable use of the oceans, in line with the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). Surprisingly, the current trials indicate no effectiveness of Banana pingers and PALs on reduction of cetacean bycatch in gillnets, representing a stark contrast to the trials of these ADDs performed elsewhere whilst Wideband PALs showed a clear reduction of the bycatch rate.

Our colleagues from the Marine & Freshwater Research institute of Iceland have presented the results of previous trials of three commercially available pingers conducted between 2017 and 2020 under commercial coastal settings of Icelandic bottom set gillnet and their effects on small cetaceans.

Dr. Alessandra Cani (UB) showed her research on Sea Turtle Bycatch focused on post-release mortality and sublethal recovery periods of ETP species caught by EU fleet of longliners in ECAO, being loggerhead turtle the species most often bycaught.
