REDUCE project

In Session 3, researchers Iça Barry (INIPO, Guinea Bissau), Ignacio Sobrino (IEO, Spain) and Mohamed El Hafedh (IMROP, Mauritania) showed the existing Scientific knowledge and recommendations for the conservation and sustainable management in Mauritania and Guinea B. fisheries.

In Session 2, experts in fisheries biology from the IEO (Jose Luis del Río and Ana Ramos) explained the basis for the Ecosystem based fisheries management and the analysis of the impact of trawling in the fishing grounds off West Africa where the fleet of ANACEF operates.

Session 1 revolved around fisheries management in the framework of the EU Sustainable fisheries partnership agreements with West Africa countries, with Charlotte Gobin from DGMARE and Ramón de la Figuera Morales, from the Spanish Fishing Department (SGP-MAPA).

We have attended the VI Annual Conference of ANACEF in Las Palmas de Gran Canarias, focused on the biological component and biodiversity of ANACEF fisheries (trawling). We have enjoyed three sessions dealing with research, conservation and sustainable fisheries #bycatch

MARINE TURTLES are inhabiting this planet since millions of years ago, playing a key role to keep the balance of marine ecosystems. REDUCE also addresses the study of bycatch of marine turtles in ECAO fisheries.

We´ve enjoyed a wonderful presentation by Lucy Arnaud about the development of an AI model for bycatch species recognition in industrial tropical tuna fisheries. This kind of tools emerge as technology that will eventually boost research and improve sustainability of fisheries.

The IFOMC (ifomc.org) is the premier conference series for developing and promoting effective fishery monitoring programs throughout the world, aiming to ensure sustainable marine resource management.

The study was conducted within the framework of the REDUCE project, presenting a novel approach to addressing the bycatch of ETPs of various taxa (sea turtles, seabirds, cetaceans, sharks) interacting with commercial fishing fleets in ECAO.

After three days of fruitful and useful work by all the attendees (scientists, technicians, states representatives, NGOs, etc) the event has been closed by the representatives of the Ministry of the Sea of Cabo Verde and the Regional Network of Members of Parliaments.

This declaration represents a common ground for West Africa countries´ authorities to review and decide the adhesion to the ´High Seas Treaty´, also known as the “BBNJ Agreement”.
