The oppression of Black holidays isn’t just a "Black issue" — it reflects the health of democracy and the inclusivity of national identity. When any group’s contributions are dismissed, it undermines the shared sense of belonging that democracy requires to thrive.

Black celebrations affirm identity, culture, and community. The suppression of these events sends a message that Black contributions to society are not valued.

When these holidays are minimized or ignored, it perpetuates a false, one-dimensional narrative of American history that centers on whiteness. This denial of history makes it harder for the U.S. to reckon with its legacy of slavery, segregation, and systemic racism.

Black holidays like Juneteenth, Kwanzaa, and Black History Month are not just celebrations; they are acts of historical preservation. They highlight stories and achievements that have often been excluded from mainstream narratives.

The oppression or erasure of Black holidays and celebrations in the U.S. has significant and far-reaching implications, not only for Black Americans but for the nation as a whole.

Black History Month roots trace back to the est of Negro History Week by Carter G. Woodson in 1926, which evolved into Black History Month in 1976 through the efforts of President Gerald Ford. It has since been observed annually, much like other significant cultural and historical commemorations.

Black History Month is not a DEI initiative but a nationally recognized observance that has been celebrated for decades to honor the contributions of Black Americans to the nation's history and culture.
