Oh yeah this is similar to an equivalence test

11.08.2025 11:18 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

So you want a simultaneous test of three things:
b1 != 0 &
b2 != 0 &
b1 x b2 = 0

Not sure how that would work but it’s an interesting puzzle. I wonder if it’s as simple as imposing model constraints, or setting your b1 and b2 null hypotheses around some other value besides zero

11.08.2025 11:17 β€” πŸ‘ 1    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

There’s probably more than one way to do this. Why wouldn’t an R-squared for the model with both predictors (vs model with neither) do the trick?

Data come in many different formats and are used in many different ways, but in many cases, a checklist like this (along with good data documentation) can help you verify if a dataset is in a usable format for most general purposes.

New preprint!

Does data quality drop when participants respond to #EMA / #ESM surveys in the presence of others?

We explored this in a pooled analysis of 4 ESM studies and found (subtle) shifts in burden & response behavior depending on participants’ social context:

What I really want is for every person to try out an LLM by having a conversation on a thing they already know a lot about. Like get your local auto mechanic to ask it about engine stuff and see how impressed they actually feel

Funny thing is - unless you are an expert in an area, it’s tough to tell whether you’re talking to a PhD or just a person who speaks confidently and eloquently about things they know little about.

Lysenko forced farmers to plant seeds very close together because he (incorrectly, against all evidence) believed that seeds of the same plant wouldn’t compete with each other. This led to famine in Russia and China that killed ~30 million people. He also imprisoned & executed dissenting biologists.

Any ideas?

I can get software (R plus Blimp, an imputation program) to run on one node of an HPC, but not the other.

1. I use a container so it's not a package version issue.
2. The nodes use the same version of Linux
3. The slurm is the same so it's not resource allocation.

Reminder: A little under 2 months left to submit to our special issue in Psychology of Addictive Behaviors (deadline: September 30)! We're seeking empirical studies & theoretical reviews that tackle the mixed evidence around whether and why people use substances to regulate their emotions.
