Math, sailboats, fencing. Occasionally a bit of writing when I can't avoid it. Erstwhile codexian.

06.11.2025 00:04 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0It devolved into fantasy by 2/3 of the way through. I mean, imagine telling every billionaire on earth that the new currency will reduce their wealth to $50M or whatever it was. Everyone involved would be dead by midnight. The one thing the wealthy are genuinely good at is hanging on to wealth.

One way to make the (x-h) shift more natural is to move the k to the other side of the equation. So if the parent function is y=f(x), don't make the shifted function y=f(x-h)+k. Make it y-k=f(x-h), then you're using the same rule for both axes. Once it's clear you can move the k around as needed.

I did not know that! Thanks. I agree with the comment below, there needs to be a way to collapse a thread, but this is still a big improvement on "flat by design" discussion spaces

22.01.2025 03:14 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0There are a few "power users" modding the big subs who are often not acting in good faith. The site is still the best discussion site on the web IMO, but still. I live in fear that it's going to be taken over the way twitter was. You could buy off 20 power mods and ruin the site.
22.01.2025 03:09 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Threaded discussions are also just better, IMO. I like bsky, but reddit and usenet have hosted far deeper and more interesting discussions for me than twitter or any flat discussion site ever has.

In a forest of brown, orange, and golden leaves, a mermaid with orange/gold hair sits on a rock in a small light blue pond. She stares at her open palms, illuminated by a beam of sunlight. Purple flowers in shade lie scattered on the ground in the foreground. The words "January/February 2025" and "Issue Sixty-Two" are at top. The list of credits is on the bottom

07.01.2025 15:20 β π 164 π 141 π¬ 3 π 18RAH had more than one trans character. Friday was a brain transplant; "Slipstick" Libby was a (dead) male genius who was brought back and chose to be a woman. The fascinating thing about Libby was that it was treated as a minor plot point, normal health care offered to everyone in that sitch.
10.01.2025 02:07 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Is he aware that the greatest genius in Heinlein's "Extended Universe" was trans, and that her transition was treated as just ordinary health care, a normal option open to anyone, no commentary?
I'm not up for defending RAH here, but Elmo picking him specifically seems kind of odd, you know?
