This graph is from the Environmental Impact Assessment report of a proposed data centre here in Ireland that claims to be "in compliance with" the national climate commitments, despite planning to be powered with on-site generation using gas. It claims that because Gas Networks Ireland has a long-term plan to replace fossil gas with biomethane and hydrogen, it will be "net-zero" by 2040.

This is absolute deception: Carbon budgets are the fundamental legal basis for the climate law, not a long-term net zero target. If we exceed the budgets, because of projects like this, then we will have to pay huge sums to extract those CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere again, using technologies we don't even know will scale.

The project's impact assessment shows that over its lifetime, it will emit 29 *million tonnes* of CO2, nearly *half* of the entire sectoral emissions ceiling for the Commercial Built Environment to 2030.

In any case, energy projections show that we don't have policies in place to decarbonise the gas grid - until we do, GNI's long term decarbonisation strategy should not be used in these impact assessments.

re-sharing this @hannahdaly.ie post from my bookmarks bc I reckon it's quite important: this dynamic, of false promise used to justify multi-decadal fossil infrastructure, is so pervasive and so bad.
