I got the impression Swans was WAY sold out here. And maybe the last tour?

We did not. Our days have turned out to be full enough that we haven’t had energy for nightlife. Maybe on a longer trip…

So sorry for your and your family’s loss.

Check out Maciste in Hell sometime. One of Fellini’s favorites as a kid.

Jacobs was almost definitely the major avant-garde figure I’m farthest from having a handle on.

How about Abel Ferrara, Leon Ichaso and Adam Shankman?

(Bojan Bazelli has worked with each multiple times)

Wild Grass? One of his best for sure. If you ever see Mon Oncle d’Amerique it may feel like a more palatable version of the editing technique he used in the earlier Je T’aime Je T’aime.

It’s definitely an unusual one! Are you generally into Alain Resnais?

Was Timecrimes and Je’Taime Je’Taime a double bill? Because it sounds like an amazing pairing but it also sounds like it could be exhausting (though I love both films.)

Also Clark Kent and his dad, apparently.

That seems like an awful lot of effort for someone to go through just for me to check an apparent Best Picture Oscar winner off my watchlist.

Mine too, though I also had a third in the Ryder row. But my Day-Lewis row is a wreck: 23-42-4.

Funny thing: Don Giovanni is being staged in Montreal this weekend too.

The Lon Chaney Home Page

I immersed myself in his filmography and biography for several months for a piece I wrote sixteen years ago, but I’m rusty. I think Jon Mirsalis might be a good person to reach out to though. His email is on his website www.lonchaney.org/index.html

I will try! But if navigating scalpers in a foreign country proves impossible, there’s always this advice:

Maybe I’ll just stand outside the venue and hear them.

Presentation: Hands on History | San Francisco Public Library An intimate, behind-the-scenes look at the vibrant cultural scene of 1970s and '80s San Francisco through the lens of the Steve Abbott Papers. Steve Abbott -- a poet, journalist, essayist, novelist, activist, and single gay father -- captured the heart of San Francisco's literary and queer communities during a pivotal era, from the early gay civil rights movement to the rise of the AIDS crisis.

Tonight at the main #SanFrancisco Public library: A Hands-On Journey through the Steve Abbott Papers in advance of the release this month of Fairyland:. Attendees receive free tickets for a screening of the film at the Roxie.

Found out Swans (who I’ve never seen live before) are playing in Montreal the night we arrive… but the show is sold out!

Letterboxd graph showing numbers of films seen per year. Negligible numbers until 1896-1900 followed by a decline until 1908-1909, then another general increase before another drop in 1917, followed by a nearly-unbroken rise to a high point in 1933 followed by a bit of a drop to a relatively stable level (with a few exceptional peaks in 1949 & 1964-1974) until my cinephilia hit in 1997, at which point the numbers were consistently higher than ever before with increasingly large spikes in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2013 & 2018, before dropping in 2020 to levels not seen since 1929 before one last uptick to in 2022-2023 to the pre-1997 average before dropping again.

I have a fairly similar graph but my early high year is 1933 and my drop off didn’t really hit until after 2019.
