Maybe the very first song I was “obsessed” with. I finally got to see them live in like 2009-ish in Poland. Great band, Vernon Reid is a badass.

They could renew approvals, but this is a convenient non tariff trade barrier where they don’t need to do anything at all. So I am speculating that this could linger, there is no official word from the Chinese that I’ve heard. Current tariffs would virtually price it out of the market anyway.

I’m not saying the plant approvals are “canceled”necessarily, they are just expired and there is no indication that renewals are coming. They renewed pork plants relatively quickly (pre trade war), but not beef. There is little to no product being exported to that market right now.

Update: US beef access to China is effectively closed now, and that has nothing to do with the retaliatory tariffs China places on US beef, but rather that it looks like they will not be renewing US plant approvals now so exporters haven’t been able to ship. Was recently a $2B market.

FWIW I work very close to this issue. Our US beef plant approvals (approved by China) have expired, China should normally renew the approvals but have not yet and the approvals renewals are “on hold”. They renewed pork plants on Sunday, but not beef. So it’s a bit up in the air right now.
