Rosuvastatin = Crestor
Ezetimibe = Zetia

I’m Dr. Ashley Perkins & though I am…daughter, I am also a pharmacist who has had significant experience w/the statin class of meds. Once my mother had the significant side effect of muscle pain after only taking a single dose of Atorvastatin, choosing Rosuvastatin would not have been my choice. I am not sure if u are aware or not but the statin class is separated into 2 groups, ones that have a higher incidence of LDL lowers & the other group has a sig. less percentage of LDL lowering capabilities. We know that the more the statin lowers the LDL level, the inc. chances a pt will experience muscle pain. Atorvastatin & Rosuvastatin are in this former group, high % of LDL lowering w/higher chances of muscle pain. Rosuvastatin actually has a higher % lowering per mg than Atorvastatin. I understand the plan was to have my mom take the lowest dose every other day but even still, Atorvastatin only took 1 dose so I think it’s fair to assume only 1 dose of Rosuvastatin would do the same.

My mom really does not want to take another statin and who could blame her, I cannot and if she was one of my patients in the pharmacy, I wouldn’t blame them either. Since she has explained to me that the medication was prescribed in the first place for increased plaques observed on her arteries & we want to prevent this from further accumulation, another medication class is an option. Ezetimibe is a viable option and I’ve already spoken to her about this option as it’s not related to the statin class and she would be more comfortable with an option like this. Mom has given me permission to share. The physician & pharmacy did not let her know about the side effect but I did & after seeing what they wanted to put her on next, I told her it should come from me so they take her seriously
