I mean there’s criticism … and then there’s attacking every EU treaty, calling the Germans Nazis and repeating Putin talking about the expansion of the EU and NATO.

I’d rather my president be pro-Europe than repeating Kremlin talking points.

An incredibly satisfying article. I appreciate the GAA does a lot of good work but I cannot stand the sanctimony and hubris that so often accompanies the organisation.

Maybe a whitewasher of imperialist Russian aggression in the Áras, similar to Clare Daly, is exactly what Ireland needs to wean itself off Kremlin propaganda.

When a parrot wanted to connect with a distant friend, a touchscreen showed a selection of other birds available online. The parrots learned to activate the screen, designed specially for them, by touching it gently with their tongues rather than pecking aggressively with their beaks.
"We had 26 birds involved," said Hirskyj-Douglas. "They would use the system up to three hours a day, with each call lasting up to five minutes." The interactions ranged from preening and playing with toys to loud vocal exchanges.
"When we went through the data, we found that most of these parrots had favourite friends," said Hirskyj-Douglas.

Pet parrots which typically live alone (whilst those in the wild live in large flocks) were given the technology to call each other. They would use it for up to three hours a day, and developed favourite friends 💔

I guess this has probably already gone viral somewhere but I am simply dying at this picture of a bear that looks like it hired a photographer to do a glamour shoot

Lovely to hear Melvyn Bragg talking about the big idea behind "In Our Time": to get academics on the air, talking about the subjects they were most passionate & knowledgeable about, without worrying about whether they had "media training".

It's remarkable that this was (& remains) such an odd idea!

Not blaming you at all, I saw your comment and understand that you don’t choose the images. Regrettably though, this is a feature and not a bug of how a lot of British people imagine their country to look, including whoever generated the original image. It can be exasperating. That’s all.

I’ve yet to see an image of Italy used in similar circumstances where they include the island of Corsica yet many of our neighbours seem to be either profoundly ignorant of the borders of their own country or subject to Russian style ambitions for re-expansion.

Catherine Connolly may be basically a well-meaning person who has good positions on various things, but she has showed very poor judgement in important situations and doesn't seem to have learned from her mistakes or pulled away from those people or positions

Catherine Connolly says “the Ukraine” in every speech on the war. She opposes Ireland providing Ukraine paltry combat medic and de-mining training, and objects to all EU arms funding for Ukraine.

She took part in a PR blitz for Bashar al-Assad in Syria, but wouldn’t clap for Zelenskyy in the Dáil.

If you asked me to imagine 2025 as a kid I might have come up with flying cars, space travel... Never in a million years would I have foreseen a Fianna Fáil Taoiseach giving a speech at the Dublin Pride parade to mark the ten year anniversary of Ireland’s referendum to legalise gay marriage…

I love the the difference in reporting focus. American news focuses on the stock market effect. European news focuses on the lives lost.

Fridges don't need to do this. They just need to do heat exchange and keep things cold, consistently.

Hungary received €70.47 billion from the EU between 2004 and 2020, while contributing only €14.83 billion in the same period. Yet Orbán’s regime has consistently denigrated European values and undermined the very Europe that kept on bankrolling his country. Enough is enough.

The colonialism of British TERFs is through the roof. Again. This open letter from Irish feminists to British transphobes in 2018 remains relevant.

Where was JK Rowling's money for #RepealThe8th? But she has it to spread British Anti-LGBT hate in Ireland? #Spéirgorm
