Thanks to @tinyicybubbles.bsky.social for helping cut this ice! Hoping to get some ages (probably over 400,000 years) from this ice from 651 m deep. @cambridge-earthsci.bsky.social @erc.europa.eu @royalsociety.org

🧊Our researchers have just finished analysing ancient Antarctic ice spanning 1.2 million years of climate history!

The Beyond EPICA project extends the ice core climate record by 400,000 years, helping us to understand long-term climate patterns and improve future predictions.

In a UN speech today, President Trump said that "all of these [climate] predictions were wrong".

Back in 2019 I led a research effort to digitize old climate model projections and assess how well they did. Turns out they got future warming pretty spot on!

Evidence & Causes of Climate Change | Royal Society Climate change is one of the defining issues of our time. It is now more certain than ever, based on many lines of evidence, that humans are changing Earth’s climate.

For answers to key questions around #ClimateChange, including how scientists know that recent changes in our climate are caused largely by human activities, see our page of frequently-asked questions: royalsociety.org/news-resourc...

I doubt there is a β€œcause” for autism, but if I wanted to test for possible contributory factors, I wouldn’t ask an economist or a lawyer. I’d ask a medical scientist who could tell me what the scientific literature tells us. All of it: not just the bit that gives the answer I want to hear.

If anyone is reading, then I have repurposed the Wacswain account to show my name (Eric Wolff). The ERC project has ended, so I can’t claim to speak for its members any more. But I will start posting here again, mainly about science but I may be tempted to give my opinion occasionally as well!

Misleading U.S. Department of Energy climate report chooses bias over science, climate scientists say DOE report written by climate contrarians shares misleading information on climate change and excludes well-established evidence.

In July 2025, the U.S. DOE released a climate report tied to EPA’s proposed rollback of emissions rules.
The report claims to challenge decades of climate science…
But scientists say it is unscientific and misrepresents key findings 🧡

Our project β€œBeyondEPICA” collected ice at least 1.2million years old. Now we are meeting at this palazzo in Venice to finalise how it will be analysed to show us the climate and CO2 across this fascinating time period!

Science under threat | Royal Society The Royal Society will use its voice and the expertise of our Fellows to resist the various challenges to science.

Science advances our economic, physical, and social and cultural wellbeing, and is key to a sustainable future. However, we live in times of great change, and the values that have driven science for the benefit of humanity are under threat. Read our statement here: royalsociety.org/news/2025/02...

Antarctic ice shelf kept its cool during the last interglacial period An ice core suggests that the West Antarctic Ice Sheet lost ice 125,000 years ago, but not to the extent proposed by some scenarios.

5. The fact that a significant part of WAIS was lost anyway still says we should avoid the climate that caused it. That requires us to reach net zero sooner rather than later.

4. Lessons for the future?
This suggests we should expect significant ice loss from WAIS over the next decades to centuries, but makes the very worst case scenarios look slightly less realistic.

3. We find:
a. The Ronne Ice Shelf survived
b. But the West Antarctic Ice Sheet (WAIS) certainly retreated .
So it's good news and bad. The ice sheet retreated but didn't do the worst case that some models proposed. WAIS retreat was probably mainly in the Amundsen sector, not the Weddell.

2. Our article uses the Skytrain Ice Rise ice core to show what happened around the West Antarctic Ice sheet (WAIS) in the last interglacial, 125000 years ago. This is a time when Antarctic temperature was similar to what we expect in the next few decades. What we found follows in number 3.

The Ronne Ice Shelf survived the last interglacial - Nature Sea salt data from an ice core record show that Antarctica’s Ronne Ice Shelf survived the last interglacial, the last period of enhanced and sustained global warmth about 125,000 years ago.

Million year-old bubbles could solve ice age mystery What is probably the world's oldest ice, dating back 1.2m years ago, has been dug out from deep within Antarctica.

Our planet's history recorded in ice just got about 50% longer! Beyond EPICA: Oldest Ice have reached the Antarctic bedrock and what is probably the planet's oldest ice - the trapped ancient air bubbles could help us better understand climate change. My story here www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
