To people who argue there is no power differential between women and white cis hetero men, I would ask them to show me a man that would willingly trade places with his wife for the next three years.

It is time for social workers to remember our roots, to rise up, to come together, to fight for academic freedom, and ensure social work education continues to reflect the values and ethics of social work.

If left unchallenged, these policies will set precedent for every social work education program in the country, threatening accreditation, undermining professional standards, and silencing the very values of justice, dignity, and inclusion that define the field.

This assault on academic freedom in Florida is not an isolated event – this is a blueprint. Similar legislation targeting (ADEI) is emerging across the U.S. This is a coordinated movement to reshape higher education nationwide.

Now, just months later, the protections promised by CSWE as our accreditor have been withdrawn. This lack of transparency undermines trust in the accreditation process and places programs, faculty, and students in jeopardy.

In January, our program completed the CSWE recertification process. During the site visit, faculty and administration were reminded reminded that accreditation is contingent on adherence to the nine professional competencies across all levels of social work which include social justice and ADEI.

CSWE’s decision to revoke protections for accredited programs teaching ADEI in states with unconstitutional anti-ADEI laws was made without transparency. Our department did not hear this from CSWE directly, but from our Board of Trustees.

ADEI are central components of the values and ethics of the social work profession and education.

In practice, this weakens protections for programs because it places compliance with state law above adherence to CSWE’s own accreditation standards and professional ethics.
