I don't get the anti ID card thing. Most EU countries have a form of ID card. If you carry a smart phone, 'they' know who you are, where you are, where you've been, what your interests are. Where you shop, where you eat etc. What difference does an ID card make. Apart from proving you are legal?

I'll agree with that. Easier and cheaper to have a roof over your head in France and better health care. You have the choice, in France. Most choose more family time.
