Sous le pavés, la plage.
Under the pavement - The beach!

I end May with this graffiti slogan of the near-revolution of May 1968 in France. It encapsulates the dream of the paradise our worlds could become if we chose to take control of them together, to democratize everything for all. It also honors the legacy of radical urban geography that informed the philosophy of the Situationist International, a major influence in the 68 youth milieu.

The choice to feature a Black woman is an intentional one: How can we dream of the city as a beach without recognizing the history of the beach as a fiercely segregated and racialized space in so many societies… or the segregated beaches of colonized Algeria enjoyed by so many French settlers before the Algerian liberation? If we dream of a beach we can only dream of the beach for all, a site of universal freedom and possibility.

The central photo is from public domain site Pexels. The photographer is @dazzle_jam, who tells me that the model is named Ella.
