Happy Lunar New Year!

Red is traditionally considered the color of celebrations and prosperity. However, one particular shade, Red Dye No.3, is not doing so hot.

I was deeply disappointed by the lack of nature/science/climate/enviro on many major end-of-year book listsโ€”so I decided to make my own!

Introducing: โœจ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ“š The 2024 Holiday Gift Guide to Nature & Science Books โœจ๐ŸŽ๐Ÿ“š

Faith communities can have such a powerful influence in driving folks towards climate action. I wrote a piece earlier this year on eco-chaplaincy for Sojourners to show how the climate crisis is also a faith crisis.

Also check out Katharine Hayhoeโ€™s list of eco-faith communicators!

Help out a climate lady? If you communicate about climate for a living Iโ€™d be so grateful if you took this quick survey about your work. The info shared will be used for a report on the state of climate comms and to create programs that support YOU!

Seems like scientific publications are now also participating in the โ€œrace for breaking news.โ€

Itโ€™s WAY harder to produce quality stories and research when youโ€™re forced to have a quick turnaround. Kudos to the scientists and journalists who are still doing remarkable things in these conditions.

also applies to climate coverage!

For context:

It's estimated that the most vulnerable countries in the world need at least $1.3T per year to accelerate the clean energy transition and build resilience to climate impacts.

COP29 closed yesterday with an agreement for $300B per year (not the actual funds, just the agreement).

In our world, neutrality means continuing to use climate language that Big Oil and Gas have imposed on us for decades to make us feel responsible for our planetary crisis while they rake in billions of dollars without a smidgen of guilt.

I have often received ire from journalists who say calling myself a climate activist makes me โ€œless objective.โ€

But echoing @charliejgardner.bsky.social, I feel a moral responsibility towards my 8.2 billion fellow humans to speak up.

I am a climate scientist, journalist, educator AND activist.

โ€œThe problem with the climate movement is that people are not prioritizing the things (tech) that matters most to meeeeee!โ€ - every white climate guy forever, despite the fact that they have also driven the climate agenda forever. I'm currently reading The Dharma Bums by Jack Kerouac because I am fascinated by how people inculcate Buddhist philosophies. What about you?
