Technically they have eight, four on each side of the store (about three hundred feet apart) but usually they only have one employee for registers so they only open one of the set of four.

Self-checkout is usually only 4 registers or so and everyone has carts full enough to fill the trunk of a car. And usually the people with this many groceries also have kids. So they're trying to scan dozens of items while wrangling a child. It's chaos. Also they never have bags for some reason.
