Trepidation, Defiance and Déjà Vu Mark Mexican Independence Day in Chicago
“The important thing is that they’ve held it, they’re not intimidated, and we’re showing who we are and celebrating our history, our culture and our traditions."
"Trepidation, Defiance and Déjà Vu Mark Mexican Independence Day in Chicago" by Lilia Fernández, UIC history professor for @inthesetimes.com
"Organizers and residents have been, and are, largely moving forward with a mix of trepidation and defiance."

The Real Estate Pity Party
Tenant power helped carry Zohran Mamdani to victory—and the landlord lobby is none too pleased.
5/ In the primary, Mamdani won 7 of the 10 districts with the most rent-stabilized units. Turnout in majority-renter districts rose 7.5% on average, signaling the growing political power of tenants.

A National Day of Action for Higher Ed
On April 17, higher ed unions, AAUP chapters, and student organizations across the U.S. are coming together to fight back against the coordinated assault on teaching and learning, and to mobilize for ...
When the @actioninhighered.bsky.social did their "Day of Action" last year, they had something like 60 campuses involved, which was impressive.
Tomorrow, they've got more than 170 campuses from across the country throwing down.

Has the Fire Ceased?
We will not stop until Palestine is free.
@emanabdelhadi.bsky.social:
Has the fire ceased?
After 467 days, will Gazan skies carry clouds & sun rather than bombs & death?
Will history rewrite itself? Will those who stood silent claim to have been there all along by our sides? Will our memories be enough of a witness?
Has the fire ceased?

“You Have To Shake Up the Status Quo”: Marilyn Sneiderman’s Struggle To Transform Labor
“Marilyn stands out as a leader who not only recruited disruptors but spent a lot of her time and effort trying to figure out how to defend and maintain the space for disruptors.”
If you don't know much about Marilyn Sneiderman's impact on the labor movement—and even if you do—I urge you to read this piece from @sarahljaffe.bsky.social in @inthesetimesmag.bsky.social. Sneiderman just retired, but her transformational impact is ongoing. A great read.

Adeel Mangi deserved better from everyone involved: from the White House, which was evidently unprepared for the attacks on Mangi and unable to effectively defend him from them; from his Senate Democratic opponents, who would rather hand a life-tenured appeals court seat to Trump than confirm the victim of a bad-faith smear campaign; and even from his Senate Democratic supporters, who would rather shield their colleagues from the possibility of criticism than force them to take a mildly uncomfortable vote.
Wrote one more time about Adeel Mangi, and about the Democratic senators whose craven embrace of a vile Islamophobic smear campaign should follow them around for the rest of their political careers inthesetimes.com/article/adee...

Hard disagree! In my opinion, the best books are part of the effort of ushering in a new world to come, which means that the "book" as object itself is just part of what should be a larger organizing vehicle. Publishers never allocate $ to marketing, should be $ for organizing. Book project > Book
