Looking for recommendations, I have been in a historical fiction groove for a bit, but have exhausted the Maisie Dobbs series and Connie Willis and the time travelers.

An interesting debate! I think both answers are ultimately correct. IMO…Unmodified cells are the answer now. Proven, safe, with impact. But not perfect, and engineered cells may well be the future. (And Surgery Branch abandoned IL-2 and IL-12 engineering with early technology)

Absolutely. And would read it with my “real” choices to get my first ending, and then would go back and try to map all the alternate endings.

The retrospectoscope is the easiest tool to wield in science and medicine. And it distorts real-time knowledge and decisions. And users of it should not be put into leadership positions. Facts matter.
