EBUG addendum: 'If bus journey times are speeded up, operators might resort less to removing stops. And at W Maitland St, a better stop layout might help.'
Q (Cllr Mowat) and A (Cllr Jenkinson) at Council tomorrow. Plus our helpful addendum.

S'pose there's little likelihood of our addendum being included?

To answer @sw20.info and other qs, could you suggest ballpark answer to:
'if a bus priority project allows you run a route with 1 fewer bus+driver, how much would you save?'

Substantial, but quantification generally comes as each bus priority project goes to T&EC.
It should then be easy in principle to calculate 'x minutes saved = Β£y' using the 'how much does a bus+driver cost per day' formula. Or 'how much do you save by taking a bus+driver out of route z'

Obviously, higher bus fares in Edinburgh & the Lothians are not good news.
Here's www.cpt-uk.org/news/cpt-cos... latest breakdown of rising bus operating costs.
(If anyone suggests it's due to bus drivers being overpaid, remind them of the recruitment and retention issues operators face.)

CEC got a 'masterplan' (our words) 20+ years ago. Can't find the 'January 2003' report on the website, but officers should be able to.
Should broadly still be valid; should be 0 need for more consultancies £££.

Shhh! There's a whole thread on twitter about how bus lanes on Calder Rd 'maybe' caused congestion there after 2011.
Even though those bus lanes were installed in the 1990s.

In CEC archives from c2000, there's a study detailing a masterplan for a tram network, including a build/priority programme.
AFAWK little has changed to invalidate the essential outcomes, so it would still seem valid in principle.
(Of course Councils love to constantly reinvent the wheel, so £££s)

If you look at the totality of the network over the last c.10 years;
operations @lothianbuses.bsky.social
infrastructure @edinburghcouncil.bsky.social
the poor decisions are almost invariably those that rest with the Council.

Oh dear. Slightly worrying signs at TEC of the Council seeking more control of Lothian Buses operations.
The last thing Edinburgh needs is Councillors and officers running it.

Salutary lessons from NE England and London. MSPs and Councillors note:
If you think 'that's buses sorted' by subsidy instead of investment, you'll end up without any.
And please don't rebrand maintenance & subsidy as investment.

Thanks for the bus mentions; but be careful not to fall for ScotGov's trap of claiming the concessionary fares schemes are a subsidy towards buses. As we often point out, it's a personal benefit, and operators neither gain nor lose by taking part.
(It's the law)
