Why have we let side-hustle private landlords seize control of our housing – and our politics? | Peter Apps Failed Thatcherite policy monetised complex housing needs. No wonder those who benefit are loth to change it, says Peter Apps, a contributing editor at Inside Housing

WASPInomics and the magic avocado tree Why boomers struggle to make sense of the millennial world.

My latest, exploring with numbers how the millennial household budget is basically incomprehensible to retired boomers.

"Now, Sir, may I be permitted to say a few words, after stating the position of the Government, on my own position as the organ of the Government in the matter. Sir, the course which I have pursued exposes me, I am well aware, to all those weapons of taunt and sarcasm which the right hon. Gentleman opposite (Mr. Disraeli) knows so well how to wield. They are the fair weapons of opposition at all times, and I have been long used to them, and I should not complain of them if they were wielded by even more than the skill and dexterity with which they are used by that right hon. Gentleman. But, Sir, it is a different thing with respect to those hon. Members supporting the present Government, who are attached honestly and earnestly to reform. With respect to them, I must say, that when the statement I have made is held to be open to suspicion, such suspicion can hardly be entertained without weakening and destroying my utility and my position as the organ of the Government in this House. If I haveβ€”[The noble Lord appeared now to be affected by deep emotion, and paused. Mean while he was loudly and repeatedly cheered from both sides of the House.]β€”If I have done anything in the cause of reform, I trust that I have deserved some degree of confidence, but, at all events, I feel that, if I 844do not possess that confidence, I shall be of no use to the Crown or to the country, and I can no longer hold the position I now occupy. These, Sir, are times of no ordinary importance, and questions arise of the utmost difficulty. I shall endeavour to arrive at those conclusions which will be for the best interests of the Crown and of the country, and I trust that I may meet with support. I have now, Sir, only to move that the House at its rising do adjourn to Thursday, the 27th of April."

In 1854, Lord John Russell broke down & wept at the despatch box, at the collapse of his Reform Bill.

MPs were largely sympathetic, cheering until he'd recovered, & reports referred only obliquely to what had happened.

I prefer that to some of the gloating & close-camera footage we're getting now.

The cynical words of an old law professor seem again apt, sadly.

Domestic law is a matter of law.

Foreign laws are a matter of expert evidence.

International law is a matter of fiction.

Weighing up a lawyer's public shame against open justice As the Solicitors Disciplinary Tribunal closes itself off from scrutiny, anonymity applications may increase.

A new piece from me on the delicate debate around whether to name (and inevitably shame) solicitors guilty of serious misconduct.

Quant Firm’s $1 Billion Code Is Focus of Rare Criminal Case The prosecution of a trader could define how a quant algorithm can become stolen property and have a huge impact on Wall Street’s talent war.

Nice little quote about trade secrets from this US litigation: "Algorithmic trading code is not static like the secret recipe for Coca-Cola; rather, like an open can of Coke, it quickly goes stale". www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...
