16.02.2026 01:13 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0it's been about two months since the last time i heard news like this. i guess this is what my 40s is going to be defined by, whee

16.02.2026 00:58 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0good morning
15.02.2026 21:50 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0well, that's one way to find out
15.02.2026 21:23 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0*takes off p2p engineer hat* like there's probably going to be some notion of cryptography if only for identity but like yeah if your threat model is the state shutting you down then there's no great way to circumvent it in public heh
15.02.2026 09:31 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0the "juicy target" of obtaining messages is not that hard when many discords are public
honestly, it's probably easier to design something where the operator has no access to messages & cannot force invitations to groups, but that requires more stateful clients
the movie and books lead up to the same event, but it's just, yeah, the end of the opening arc, and the politician who struggles with heart meds, the student protests, the cultists, all feature rather more heavily, as does the general
the movie is about kaneda and tetsuo but the comic is way more
not to spoil anything but if you had any questions about "how much _is_ this about post war japan?" the books will solidly answer that question
15.02.2026 07:42 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0the movie covers about 70% of book one, there's six volumes
(or four depending on publisher, but i cba to rough out a %age)
gamelan is basically folk techno and i love it

15.02.2026 06:50 โ ๐ 7 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0it is 1997, i am aged thirteen, and i am unable to sleep, i am flicking through all four channels just before 1am, and i settle in on a random subtitled film

part of why akira still holds up is that you don't really need to understand post war japan to appreciate the themes of political corruption, disenfranchised youth, and the weaponisation of science disguised as progress
those things haven't changed much since akira was written, over forty years ago
i dunno, even as a subs liker, the modern pioneer dub is pretty good, but the manga inc dub of yore is the one to avoid for sure
15.02.2026 06:31 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0here's the thing, every llm is built by crawling the internet, which includes project gutenberg, sure, but it also includes every reddit comment, many 4ch threads, and also every document the doj released...
i am dancing around the keywords, as people actively search & reply, but you get the gist
you gotta remember no-one posts their misses
15.02.2026 04:15 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0to be clear, even when it's a purposeful roll of film, 3/36 is an incredible hit rate
even when i was doing nature photo stuff on digital, it was about a 5% rate on good days
i have come to terms that for every 36 shots maybe 3 are keepers at most, but most of the time it's just a random log of where i've been, and that's ok, my phone photo roll is even more garbage
15.02.2026 04:01 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0to be fair, coding llms are trained on text, rather than just code, and it takes a lot more text to make a chatbot than it does to stochastically generate code
see also, the coding agent that wrote a series of fake callout posts "so much for the tolerant open source community" after spamming repo
there's plenty of public domain work, yes, but i would not say open source more generally fits, especially any gpl, agpl works
the difference between say, machine translation making use of the corpus, and generative stuff, is the former isn't used to rip people off, as much heh
waterfall, waterfall never changes
15.02.2026 02:44 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0turns out code can be political, not just in the free software sense, but in the "i think people should be able to do this thing, easily" sense too
15.02.2026 02:39 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0i find it easier to believe they simply do not enjoy writing yaml, sql, or react boilerplate and that's fine
but i'm still going to look generated output at it as if it's a piss tinted hero image on a slop blog
which is fine and good but my problem is the notion that code is nothing more than a medium for business interests, it just feels like the same dismissal we normally see from coders about art
15.02.2026 02:36 โ ๐ 4 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0i've seen this from both coders and artists so i think it's more of a "art makes me happy, code makes me rent" mentality
