Join us next Wednesday (4th Feb) at 19:00 (UK time) for a webinar by Dr. Alice Paine @alicerpaine.bsky.social

In this talk we’ll look at whether very large eruptions can be treated as scaled up versions of moderate volume historical eruptions or whether they should be treated as fundamentally...

Paleotemperatures through the Phanerozoic and the variation of measurement densities through time.

I'm glad to share our new study on the nature of distributions of gaps in empirical geochronologies of geological section as a function of time scale. Measurements of proxies are highly uneven if measured through time.

U.S. government has lost more than 10,000 STEM Ph.D.s since Trump took office A Science analysis reveals how many were fired, retired, or quit across 14 agencies

The US government lost more than 10,000 STEM PhDs last year, according to an analysis by Science of newly released OPM data, with 11 departures for every hire. And many OPM calls "voluntary" separations were probably pushed. www.science.org/content/arti...

Hi @kaine.senate.gov - do you have any thoughts on the events of yesterday in Minneapolis? I'd love to hear someone in your position of leadership speaking clearly and accurately about ICE gunning down a citizen.

Kilauea erupted again yesterday in a fierce display. In only the 2nd time in 40 years, park officials closed the area due to the intensity.

Fountains were officially recorded at 500 m high, grapefruit size tephra were being ejected, and tephra fall was measured up to 20 miles away.

60 seconds of bomb and lapilli sized tephra pelting my room. Instead of capturing video of the fountains, I spent my time driving around and disconnecting the water catchment systems of friends who couldn’t get home before they closed the only road into our town. #Kilauea

Deep sea mining is reckless, untested, and threatens the very fabric of island communities. @RepKimKingHinds has it right: β€œIn places like the Marianas, American Samoa, and Guam, we don’t get the luxury of being wrong… There’s no β€˜fix it and move it somewhere else.’”

Every single person doing ICE watch in Minnesota is doing it knowing that they’re putting their bodies and lives on the line and every ICE agent and cop would shoot at their shadow if it startled them. That’s not professionalism, that’s being a coward.

β€œIT’S COLD, WHATEVER HAPPENED TO GLOBAL WARMING?” is a common response to winter weather. But in certain patterns, climate change enhances the presence of cold in the US. This is one of those times. Here’s how… 1/

00Z HRRR forecasted flat ice accumulations are downright scary. Maximum ice corridor from TX to TN and another maximum in N GA through S Appalachia look to be areas that will see the worst of it with extensive tree & power grid damage. These areas also tend to have high socioeconomic vulnerability.

From Day 1 big uni’s should have organized regional emergency meetings for heads of all higher ed institutions in the area and planned a coordinated strategy with faculty union reps. That would be the definition of actual leadership! And would have avoided the race to the bottom we saw play out

That is so depressing - I feel for your friend at GT.

My alma matter (Drexel) was enthusiastically complying - DEI office gone and most programs closed down. Also, full medical school scholarship for women scrapped in favor of something more β€œinclusive” of men.

I won’t be donating to them!
