Could it be that the greatest perpetrators in your life is you? Nobody is harsher, more critical, less forgiving, or conservative in their compassion and understanding than you? I think of the song by Pink, “Don’t let me get me” (I am my own worst enemy)

Every time I see someone who is houseless or asking for money on a street corner I’m moved with compassion and sympathy. I’m humble and intelligent enough to know if I had a similar background, upbringing, and experience(s) that could be me.

Should we give to pandhandlers? Martin Luther would say yes. His theological economic is summarized in his words, “What is that to you? (If they misuse what you give them.) Give to them anyways!”

I’m reminded of the human tendency to see life through our own lens, but sometimes that lens I scratched from past experience.

Remember (especially in disagreements): how you treat others is a reflection of your character. It doesn’t matter what they did or what they said, how you respond is a reflection of you.

To live well people need to learn how to let others be wrong about them. People are going to jump to conclusions and think bad things or wrong things about you. Let them.

Something they don’t tell you as a parent is this: it gets harder. The only thing harder than parenting is parenting while sick. Sending good vibes your way

What does it mean for people who follow Jesus to take seriously the fact that Jesus came to bring division; and hold this in tension with the call to be peacemakers and participate in the ministries of reconciliation?

Emotions aren’t bad but they can be if they run and ruin your perceptions. Just because you feel a way doesn’t mean you, your life, or others are a certain way. Watch out for emotional reasoning: I feel therefore I am.

It doesn’t matter who you voted for: we’re all in the asylum. You have to decide today, who are you going to be? Are you going to be a patient or a provider? Are you going to help or are you going to hurt? Are you going to cause problems or resolve problems?

It’s cliché and hackneyed but we need to hear it over and over again: progress not perfection today.
