These were letters, given to church members who paid for them, and the letters indulged or forgave the church member’s sins. Luther and this public display of his 95 Theses are considered foundational to the Protestant religious movement, in general, and the Lutheran church, specifically. It is important to note that, like others from Luther’s generation, he was an ardent anti-Semite, though he rarely met any Jewish people. His writings called for expelling Jews from the region and burning synagogues. These same writings also targeted Catholics, and other Christian denominations.

On this day in 1517, Martin Luther posted his 95 Theses to the door of the Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany. This document laid out Luther’s arguments that the Roman Catholic church was corrupt, largely because of indulgences.

"Kvennafri," or "Women's Day Off" significantly disrupted the country, shutting down banks, schools, and many businesses, as women refused to participate in their paid and unpaid labor. The event was a major success, leading to public support for change and, the following year, the passing of a law that guaranteed equal rights for women. Image source: Iceland Mag
On this day in 1975, around 90 percent of women in Iceland went on strike. They protested unequal pay by refusing to do housework, child rearing, or the duties of their paid positions. The next year, Iceland's parliament passed a law guaranteeing equal pay for women.
