even from late chapter 1 theres lineups where theres no "perfect" answer but you can combine different abilities to get a ton of value. plus you can switch out your "mario" for even more freedom.

another huge change is that you basically get a permanent quick change. it's free on turn 1 and you can pay 1SP on later turn to make your switched partner act immmediately. and while this is powerful there's enough difficulty and complexity to make it feel worthwhile and fair

and the game never explicitly tells you this but it makes perfect sense because thats how these abilities interact in the overworld. you throw your buckler past a burning object and it's set on fire to light further things. there's so much fun stuff with the fights and overworld puzzles here

even early on you get to figure out stuff like "you can set the buckler on fire if it passes an earlier enemy in the lineup thats burning, and this can burn the enemy you hit" with just the first 2 partners. if you use the special move that hits everyone you could set everyone on fire.

like, your "mario's" main attack in this game is the kinda attack that would break TTYD in half (ranged projectile move) but then the game also introduces shields from early on and stacked enemies and those mechanics get iterated on so much. its awesome.

its honestly some great game design sauce how escape from ever after's gameplay manages to stand on its own in so many details even though on the surface its much more similar to TTYD than most other TTYD-likes. there's a few main changes but they really make things so exciting from the earlygame on
