Now, I'm not saying American exceptionalism started with Reagan, far from it. But he's the point at which American evangelical Christianity began merging with the Republican Party as a foundational tenet, because that message hits straight at a Christian theological issue millennia old.

The best summary of a complicated concept: Bellah posits that while many countries have some form of political religion, the US form of it functions in such a way that the foundational texts and practices of secular US life operate as, and serve the same sociological function as, a religion.

In other words, secular things become sacred/acquire the function and qualities of sacredness: the US flag becomes a sacred symbol, the foundational texts acquire the weight of scripture, important civic historical figures are venerated in the same fashion as holy people, etc.

(You can also see a lot of the other features of the American civil religion -- the invocation of the sacred texts, the veneration of history or "history", the infusion of the military with that same sacredness, etc, etc. Reagan's broad support came from his ability to invoke those properties.)
