We explored whether extracellular vesicles (EVs) could serve as structural elements in biomaterialsβand whether doing so would confer intrinsic bioactivity.
Artemis' thread explains how we used yogurt EVs to answer both these questions! π§ͺ

Are you from one of these states? Then we need your help to save American science!
The Senate Appropriations Committee will be marking up the President's Budget Request for science on Wednesday. People have been saying the proposed cuts "decimated" US science, but that's wrong: they are apocalyptic

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
This is a project and an area I've been working in for years. We've published numerous papers on the topic, and recently went through a competitive renewal in which the science of the grant was rigorously evaluated and supported.
And it was cut for cheap political points

The massive purge is creating chaos, taking down "mission-related" work
Over and over, the new GOP shows a shocking shift towards a highly controlling government that is obsessed with what people do and think. And what seems like a very technical policy change right now is just another step towards gutting what they see as the biggest threat to them - education
fin
This plan also opens the door to more insidious impact - a way to hit and control universities in Blue States as well.
While Blue States could decide how their block funds are spent, the GOP-run congress could massively slash funds to these states to punish the universities in that state
8/n
Ppl have focused on how recreating the NIH's complex system for reviewing/awarding grants would be inefficient.
True, but I think the real story here is the political control over this money - so Red States can enforce what they've done in public universities in their private universities too
7/n
But consider the end goal under Project 2025 - to dismantle the NIH and replace it with block grants to states, which would then decide independently how those funds are distributed.
So now, Red States would finally have power over a huge part of private universities' funds.
6/n
So how can you control these private unis that the GOP sees as an existential threat to their ideology? Find a way to control their funding too.
The NIH is the largest funder of universities. So, if the GOP can break the NIH then they can crush private universities financially
5/n
However, even in FL the ability for the government to control universities is primarily limited to public unis where the state controls their funding and policies.
Private unis have way more autonomy proportional to how much State-independent funding they bring in - like NIH funds.
4/n
This includes completely replacing the boards of universities with political appointees, elimination of diversity efforts, and even denial of tenure to faculty seen as enemies to far-right ideology.

3/n
To see what the GOP wants to do to the USA, look no further than Florida which is a glimpse into our far-right future. In FL for years under Desantis, universities have been brutally targeted, dismantled, and subjected to highly political control
2/n
I wondered why Trump's Project 2025 took such a technical interest in NIH funding - but now I think it is clear this is all window dressing for the bigger goal of destroying American universities... or to be more exact, to find a way to control them π§ͺ #SciSky #MedSky #AcademicSky
