I think what amazes me most about this budgetary tight-fistedness is the way that, at the end of the day, it saves absolutely nothing on the bottom line

all these cuts and there's nothing but MORE red ink to show, because they're not actually "efficient," they're just *cheap*

Stop scolding them about the TYPE of information they disclosed - start asking why they went offline with it - start asking them what else they are hiding from the public.

A tweet from Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) includes an eye emoji followed by "You have got to be kidding me." Below is a link to The Atlantic, along with a screenshot of an article headline that reads, "The Trump Administration Accidentally Texted Me Its War Plans." The subheading states that U.S. national-security leaders mistakenly included the author in a group chat about upcoming military strikes in Yemen, which he initially thought was a mistakeβ€”until the attacks began. The article is by Jeffrey Goldberg.

A key takeaway from Columbia should be that compliance does not buy safety. Unis are viewing the admin's attack on higher ed as a prisoner's dilemma (best strategy: comply), leading to a collectively worse outcome. The only way out is collective action, & unlike true PD, unis can coordinate action.

You can have the cops come beat the shit out of your students to prove you’re not a filthy commie and they’ll still do this to you and all you’ll have done is show everyone what a pathetic little coward you are. Might as well do the right thing the first time

When social media exposes traditional media’s deceit, it’s time for independent journalists to investigate why the press is backing a president who undermines free pressβ€”and is it coordinated?

The Player’s the Thing in β€œGrand Theft Hamlet” A film about a performance of β€œHamlet” within the world of Grand Theft Auto suggests that the moral environment of revenge tragedy is not far from that of video games.

β€œGrand Theft Hamlet” is notionally a documentary, but you can think of it β€œmore as a crucible in which the solid forms of film, theatre, and video games have been stirred until they melt,” Anthony Lane writes.

Post from John Perricone

Several years ago l invited a Buddhist monk to speak to my Senior elective class, and quite interestingly, as he entered the room, he didn't say a word (that caught everyone's attention). He just walked to the board and wrote this: "EVERYONE WANTS TO SAVE THE WORLD, BUT NO ONE WANTS TO HELP MOM DO THE DISHES." We all laughed. But then he went on to say this to my students:
"Statistically, it's highly unlikely that any of you will ever have the opportunity to run into a burning orphanage and rescue an infant. But, in the smallest gesture of kindness -- a warm smile, holding the door for the person behind you, shoveling the driveway of the elderly person next door -- you have committed an act of immeasurable profundity, because to each of us, our life is our universe."

Been thinking about this a lot (not tagging the sender, for their privacy). Most of us won't have the chance for for grand, capital-R Resistance heroics. But every one of us will have a thousand small choices to make about how to live our lives and where to draw lines. Use them well.
